We (couple in 60 's) are hoping to visit friends in Calgary for 3 weeks next year.

We are on a limited budget but would value any advice !!

What's best airline/fares? What's best time of year to visit? Any rail trips which are worthwhile???

Any advice welcome !!

Thanks

Are you planning to stay with your friends the entire time and only do day trips? Rail is a pretty limited service in Canada, and the passenger rail service is expensive - it would probably be cheaper to rent a car for at least part of the time.

If you are restricted to day trips, then you can probably get as far as Banff for a day, and you might want to try and do that a few times during your 3 weeks, as there is plenty to see, and most of it is worth seeing twice. Drumheller is another destination with lots of interesting things going on.

I'm going to leave the rest of the advising re: Calgary to the people who know it much better than I. :>

The only passenger trail service out of Calgary is the Rocky Mountaineer, a luxury tour train that goes through the Rockies and on to Vancouver www.rockymountaineer.com

Assuming that "teesside" is somewhere in the UK, you might want to check a travel company called "Canadian Affair" - other posters on the forums have reported using them and that they have decent fares on flights (a forum search should also bring up those posts). Since you have a lot of time before you need to buy your tickets, you might want to use a flight search engine like kayak.com or skyscanner to monitor fares and find out what the typical range is.

As to what is the best time of year to visit .... "best" being a totally subjective thing and totally dependent on you and your preferences, it would be helpful if you gave us more information. If you want a ski or winter holiday, July is not a good time to come. Generally speaking, the best time for sightseeing in warmer weather is May though October. July and August are peak season for tourism and have the warmest weather; in Calgary, July and the Calgary Stampede is probably the busiest time of year there.
