Value family accomodation in Calgary -advice needed please

Hello we need some advice on budget accomodation for a family of 4 in Calgary for 2 nights, not sure whether its best financially and convenience wise to have one night near the airport as a later arrival 7pm (with children) and then go downtown the next day for the 2nd night or just taxi to downtown from airport to somewhere for 2 nights ?

We only really need a room only or a bed and breakfast basis

Also we are not sure where we would be best placed downtown for getting about beiong we will only have a full day and night in Calgary before getting the rocky mountaineer train early morning the next day to Vancouver ?

Can anyone help us please ?

Thank you

Sorry, yes, the 5 Downtown Suites is an actual hotel; here's its listing:

As for the safety issue, I think if you're in any city centre (or other densely populated area) after dark, you have a higher chance of encountering drugs, drunks, panhandlers, and/or homeless people. If you find this prospect disturbing, you can either avoid these areas after 9 or 10 pm, or choose accommodationsin a different location, such as near the airport or in a more residential area.

thank you CW you are so knowledgedable

one question - what's a panhandler ?

sounds like someone who makes pizza or pans for gold lol !!

Obviously whatever it means is not nice .

take care

Ah, that must be a North American term. A "panhandler" is another term for a beggar, someone who asks you for money, food, or goods for their personal needs. This is a legal activity, but Calgary has a bylaw that (in theory) restricts when, where, and how panhandling can take place. http://bit.ly/gs6iSx

Hi CW

I am hoping for your help again please or anyone else who can suggest something .

On our last day in Calgary we are to return our RV in the earlyish morning and then we don't fly until evening - we have asked to extend the RV hire but they cannot guarantee this so what we are think of doing is leaving our cases with the RV company and then going somewhere with the children for the rest of the day to fill the time ( no way will we spend all day at an airport !

so the drop off for the RV is Moraine Rd NE Calgary - what places can you suggest please that we can go to not too far away and easy and inexpensive by public transport (if there is any in that area ) or by taxi which would mean a return taxi back also to RV hire place to collect bags then they would drop us to the airport - what is there to with children near there in all weathers? - any suggestions - bearing in mind our window to do anything is likely to be from 10 - 4pm - need some help please ! Many thanks

That's a tough one! Not a lot in the NE that I'm aware of that meets your criteria. The Aerospace Museum near the airport is not horribly kid-friendly, and it certainly won't sustain their interest for up to 6 hours. I don't know much about Spaceport at the airport, but the little that I know suggests it won't be good for up to 6 hours either.

You could catch a bus or taxi from the RV place to the nearest C-Train (tram) station (probably Marlborough), and then visit the Calgary Zoo ( www.calgaryzoo.org ), which is on the NE line. The zoo is huge, and there are plenty of indoor exhibits in case of inclement weather. The zoo has its own C-Train station, so it would be pretty hard to miss, as long as you catch a downtown-bound train.

The Glenbow Museum ( www.glenbow.org ) and Calgary Tower are both downtown, and between the two of them, you would certainly keep your kids happy for the maximum time necessary. At the Glenbow, start on the 3rd floor Mavericks exhibit - it's the best part, I think, unless there is a great touring exhibit. The Tower is right across the street from the Glenbow. But try to get out of downtown around 3 pm or sooner, in order to avoid the rush - Calgary's C-Trains get pretty full, as it is a very popular way to commute.

Glad to hear the info was helpful. When you're all unpacked and have caught your breath, I hope you'll share some more details about your trip :-) Did you end up staying downtown? How was your 6-hour stopover once you dropped the RV? How well did the RV rental work for you - some people have been reporting poor experiences with a couple of companies.

Look at the website for the Nuvo Hotel. My wife and I just stayed there. It is a little different as it must have been a condo conversion to a hotel. The nice thing is that there is a supermarket just across the street. We found excellent restaurants just a few blocks away.

The units have fridge, stove, washer, dryer and all the cups, plates, and silverware right in each unit.

We enjoyed staying there...but it is a little different.

Thanks for the suggestion, Slot14, but Shimmer166 (the OP) has already returned from their trip (see #16 on this thread), I hope you will submit a review of Nuvo Hotel Suites, if you haven't already done so.
