Weather in early May?

My husband and I will be celebrating our 30th anniversary by taking the train from Toronto to Jasper in early May and visiting Lake Louise and Golden. Can anyone give us an idea of what the weather is likely to be? We hope to do some moderate hiking and wonder if that will be possible. Will we find snow at that time of year? Rain? Or--fingers crossed--mild temperatures and sunshine?

Thanks!

May is still early spring in the Rockies. You probably won't see much snowfall, but there will still be plenty of snow on the ground at higher elevations--Sunshine Village and Lake Louise are usually open for skiing until mid-May. Some hiking is possible at lower elevations and on south-facing slopes. Even these trails will likely have patches of snow and mud.

Side roads, such as those to Moraine Lake and Takakkaw Falls will still be closed for the winter; the lakes will likely still be frozen over until later in the month anyway.

The weather in May can be quite pleasant, with clear sunny days and warmer temperatures.

Hi,

Congrats on your upcoming anniversary! If you search/read the Jasper and Jasper National Park forums, you will find other similar questions to this one.

Some Jasper specific info - The ski hill in Jasper will be closed by May (usually closes third week of April) and some of the roads/attractions will not be open yet - for instance, the road to Mt. Edith Cavell, and the road to the Miette Hot Springs. As there is still lots of snow in the high country, hiking is confined to the lower valley. To give you an idea of the season - in early May, the trees (mainly aspens & cottonwood poplars) & shrubs in the forest will not have yet leafed out - that is usually mid-to 3rd week of May when that happens. The high elevation glacier lakes that the Rockies are famous for will still be frozen - so no boat tours at Maligne Lake (which opens sometime around late May/early June)

Snow is possible (it's almost a tradition that it snows here in Jasper on the holiday weekend - 3rd Monday in May) but it is also possible to get beautiful warm sunny weather too. Night-time temps below freezing are likely (and mornings & evening are cool) - bring warm clothing/layers. Bring "mini-mitts" or light gloves for hiking as well - a springtime essential. (I keep them in the pocket of my hiking jacket all season long.)
