Cancun's "Coco the Chimp" arrested along with owner...

The local news reports today that Coco the chimp and the chimp's owner were captured today after a lengthy Federale Investigation led by PROFECO into the legalities under which Coco's owner obtained the chimp, and the lack of wild animal licenses, and the resources to maintain the chimp properly.

Coco is a bit of a celebrity in Cancun, often seen out and about the town and hotel district with its long time friend and owner, Jose Caram.

Coco is refusing to testify against Jose and is believed to be seeking political asylum through the chimp's attorneys. ;-)

How funny is that!!!

I'm going to wear my "FREE COCO" t-shirt when I go down next month and rally at the police station.

Serious though, your right, he is a celebrity down there, I always love seeing him and look forward to it again hopefully.

Interesting, I am pretty sure everyone always knew that CoCo wasn’t exactly legally here nor their “business” (selling photos and such) legal, & I once witnessed them both being escorted off the beach by a pair of police officers, presumably for not having the permits to operate on the beach, but to actually be arrested? That is weird, I guess someone (likely a competitor of some sort) filed a complaint and it was followed up on. I (not knowing the owner) always thought he was American or Canadian after overhearing him a few times talking, and as such was likely to face immigration troubles one day relating to his “work”. But the article made no mention of immigration problems, and his name suggests that he is of Hispanic decent so I guess he has Mexican citizenship.

BTW: Its PROFECA (Procuraduría Federal de Protección al Medio Ambiente) that was investigating not PROFECO.

Actually, the government agency should have been "Profepa", the Protectorate of the Environment, as per the local news which is a correction none the less. ;-)

Its no wonder young chimps are taken from the wild and their mothers SHOT DEAD in doing so, just so turists can have a nice little picture taken with the chimp. The line up of people that we saw waiting to have there pictures taken with this chimp was sickening. At least 3 times did we see up to 30 people waiting to have their picture taken at the Riu Cancun beach. People should give a little more thought about their actions as many chimps are still taken every year and just so someone can make big bucks out of the chumps that stand in line for the next picture.

Its about time this guy was stopped before theres more chimps taken to work the beachs of cancun. From what i could see its easy money at $10 a shot. Every post on this site seems to be pro Coco, are people that shallow.

Do A little research and find the facts or watch Animal Planet before having a go back please.
