Hotel suggestions

Looking to book a hotel with great big pool, excellent food and nice rooms. Hoping to find some place that is more laid back and unpretentious but still 5*. Adult only would be a bonus.

Great big pool = Valentin Imperial Maya ...... but pretty much all resorts will have at least one good sized pool.

Other adult only resorts to consider:

- Excellence resorts (any of them)

- Secrets resorts (any of them)

- El Dorado resorts (either of them)

- Iberostar Grand (might fail on the "unpretentious" requirement as it is a bit of a marble palace, then again, most resorts are);

- Royal Playa del Carmen

- Royal Hideaway

- Catalonia Royal Tulum - definitely laid back and unpretentious but a notch below all the others mentioned.

We are off to excellence riviera cancun in three weeks. Have a look at it. Pretty much as good as it gets imo. Adult only 10 restaurants and most folks on its forum go really big licks on the place, also numerous pools and a lazy river. Expensive from the uk but probs reasonable from your neck of the woods.

Thanks! I'll check these out. We used to stay at Grand Palladium mayan suite with outdoor shower years ago. Would love something similar but newer.

The Grand Palladium recently revamped (and drastically expanded) their adult only section - TRS. If you like the GP before, that one may be worth checking out.

We have stayed at several adult only in the area. There are a few that would meet your wants.

Live Aqua meets all of your requirements. It isn't a huge property which we love but has pools that run along the beach for a long ways. We like that it has a separate swim up pool so those wanting lively can have that and those wanting to relax. The beach is just gorgeous and the ocean views are amazing. There is lots of greenery right in Cancun which makes it different than many along the hotel zone. You are in your own little paradise and the beachfront there is very long and wide. Love the beach bar and the beautiful and unique dining options here. We like that it isn't far from the airport yet gives you that tropical feel plus shopping is right across the street. The renovated rooms are gorgeous! It is a perfect place for relaxing but you won't get that pretentious feel. I know exactly what you mean.

The Royal Hideaway is nice and very quiet. Pools aren't that big but very nice on a lovely beach. Oceanviews are very limited as it is villas. Barcelo has taken it over since our stay so I am not sure about the food now. It was very good. The pools weren't heated in the winter though perhaps that has changed.

The Royal In Playa del Carmen would work as well and has lovely pools. It is close to 5th avenue for shopping.

As mentioned the VIM would work nicely if looking for a large property with a great pool. Secrets resorts would also work....they are all very different. We stayed at Secrets Silver sands which has lots of great pool. The beach isn't great for swimming but the food was excellent. We actually found the food and service much better than Secrets the Vine. The beach at STV is much nicer. Secrets Maroma has a lovely pool. The excellence resorts are supposed to be very nice as well.

Riu Palace Peninsula is great, they have an adults only section, with a separate pool and drink server. Service is amazing, food is great.
