A little help in Veracruz please.

I'm headed to Veracruz at the end of the month and staying at the Fiesta Inn Malecon.

I'm looking for "Must eats." A dish at a restaurant, street food, and whatever else that might come to mind.

I don't like fish, but I do like shell seafood.

I have no problem taking taxis, traveling to a different town, or spending money on good chow.

Please advise.

If you ever come to San Diego, I will do my best to help.

Thank you in advance.

The only thing that immediately comes to mind would be getting a coffee at the Gran Cafe La Parroquia, on the malecon. The place is a Veracruz landmark. Make sure they do a tall pour of the milk.

I don't think Veracruz is much of a tourist destination for Americans. That's probably why you haven't had many responses here.

That is why I'm going there. I was in Cabo San Lucas recently, and I was disappointed. I want to experience the local food and music that Veracruz has to offer without all the Gringos.

No food input: so be it. I will explore on my own and not post a damn thing.

I agree with Peter. When the waiter did the tall pour my wife's eyes got wide as saucers...

Too bad you don't like fish, Huachinango Veracruzano (red snapper with tomatoes, garlic, onions and capers) is a local speciality.

Sorry, I'm not into "high dining", I liked visiting the mercado for stall tacos. There were wandering Jarocho musicians playing for tips.

Make sure to stop in "Guero, Guera!!!" for a helado. Just south of the Malecon.

Yeah, Huachinango Veracruzano would be what I would suggest if he ate fish. I don't eat fish either, actually, but my wife says it's great.

We stayed at Gran Diligencias on the Zocalo. Music was all around with marimba, harp, guitar and brass bands, sometimes all playing at once! After sundown a big orchestra played sultry "danzon" music while couples in fine dress danced the night away. Around the corner a DJ broadcast Latin hip hop beats. Small trios worked restaurants and street corners.

If you want to go someplace different and close to Veracruz, look up Nanciyaga. That was our favorite thing in the area. We got some good mole in Veracruz. We bought shrimp and beer on the beach, very good.
