Sea Life and Whale watching

Hi, Just thinking to take a trip in Puerto Vallarta next year and we hear that we might see some whales and dolphins in Puerto Vallarta. Does anyone have any experience with seeing the sea life taking a day boat trip to do some snorkeling? How is the water around Puerto Vallarta compare to Cancun?

Thanks for any input.

Whale watching season is Dec 8th to March 23rd (they are there before and after, but cannot legally be approached by boats).

Always plenty of dolphins in the bay.

The water is the Pacific not the Caribbean, apples/oranges.

We have done both...

The combined trip was a long boat ride to the Marietas to snorkle, with a lunch buffet and an entertaining boat crew. Whales that were spotted were pointed out as we went by but no actual "search" for them.

OceanFreindly leaves the dock with the objective of finding whales. Oscar and Keith are amazing as tour guides. They are passionate and protective of these creatures, marine biologists, I think. They LOVE their whales and that makes for a very educational and fun trip. Learn more at their website.

If you want to snorkle, go to Mismaloya Beach and hire a panga to take you to the Los Arcos rocks and snorkle there for a few hours, come back and have lunch on the beach before you head back to town. It is about 1/2 hour bus or taxi ride.

We loved our whale watching trip with Oscar and Keith. You are right on with saying they love their whales. We saw a momma and calf and were fascinated with how Oscar was timing how long the calf could stay under water . He said, good momma whale, she's teaching her calf how to survive under the water for the long trip up the coast. It was a small boat, so it seemed more intimate to see the whales. It wasn't hard to catch their enthusiasm for their whales. I am sure there are other responsible oceanographers in P.V., but we like Ocean Friendly.

Vallarta Whales is also a great option, Isabel Cardenas is a Marine Biologist and has been running probably the longest operating whale watching tour in Puerto Vallarta. http://www.vallartawhales.com/
