Do I need to book hotels if I'm going in January?

I'm hoping to do a bit of island hoping around the Krabi area, Koh Jum, Phi Phi, Lanta, some of the smaller islands. I was planning on just booking my first hotel and just take it all from there, (which way the wind blows kind of trip), however the more I look the more I'm seeing sold out and "last room available".

Am I foolish to think I can turn up and find some where in peak season? Or should I be booking all my hotels up now?

Thanks for any feedback.

Unless you want to be left with the scraps that others didn't want, I'd book a room sooner rather than later. Even the 2nd half of Jan is school holidays and it will be busy!

Just to update anyone that may come across this post at a later date. The advice of booking early is a good one! I perhaps even left it too late to stay "exactly" where I wanted, and judging on a few of the websites, places are getting sold out quite quickly. And I feel had I left it any later than now I would have been left with scraps as the last poster advised!
