What ever happened to Jack Tar Village?

Hi! We honeymooned at Jack Tar back in 1988. Just wondering what happened to the resort. It was pretty awful then!

We also used to go to Jack Tar back in the 80's - and had a good time

It was closed down quite a few years ago. It was handy that they would just fill a plane in TO and fly direct to their little airstrip.

There is a proposed mega development planned for that area.

The old Jack Tar village is rubble now and under construction on top of the site is the Ginn Sur Mer mega-resort. Old Bahama Bay was began construction nearby years ago and is still building out there. It's a beautiful resort recently bought by Ginn. The old airstrip is going to be renovated and reopened for flights into Ginn Sur Mer. Ginn's place is supposedly going to end up with two golf courses, one a Nicklaus course the other Palmer. Over 4,000 condo/hotel units, hundreds of private homes, a huge casino, etc., etc., all amounting to over 2 billion dollars of investments on the West End of GBI. Only time will tell if this all comes about but much of the below ground and ground level infrastructure, including raising the elevation some 10 feet and dredging to create the canals needed for marinas and yacht berths is well under way. The place currently looks like a wasteland because you cannot see the effects of what they are doing from roadways. However, it is already far better than it was for years before they cleared the land. It was, literally, a huge dump with tons and tons of trash. This thing is supposedly going to bring 2-4,000 jobs to the island. Again, time will tell.

I knew about the Ginn proposal and thoroughly researched their website.

I also recall a lot of hurricane damage - I thnk it was Floyd - when he went through there because the land is so flat and barely above sea level. I guess that is why they are raising the land but if another big hurricane hit whatever they build will be damaged to some extent. GBI seems to be more affected by the storms than Nassau and PI.

Thanks to the posters who mentioned what happened to the Jack Tar resort.

I was curious as I vacationed there years ago by myself, and was nostalgic for info.

Guess I just got thinking, and a quick search yielded the results for which I was looking.

I went to Jack Tar Village when i was like 2.5 years old with my mom and lil bro. it was fun Io had a great time for a little youth. I was just looking at my I.D. necklace the other day and now I wasw looking up if the place was still running. I was thinking of taking a vacation to that Childhood Destination out side of Canada. I just wanna relive...

thank you to those who were able to give a detailed report on the resort. I will tell my mom about the news. Hopefully Ginn will pick up and get it open again for Buisness.

We also went to Jack Tar Village in 1988 and I just happened to come across some old film from our trip. When we were there a tropical storm came in and made for a few wet days.

The buildings were old, but the trip was still fun as it was when we were just starting out and about all we could afford on our budget at the time. We met some great people and wish I had their names still. The new hotel looks very nice and may have to make another trip to check it out.

The Old Bahama Bay is a lovely resort. A large on site Marina and a couple of dozen homes have been built along the canals. Unfortunately Ginn is in trouble and there is no Casino, Condos etc. Even the little convenience store was closed when we were there in August. Word is they are selling the Resort. Not sure if it is open now or not. The setting is still awesome with that beach and water!
