Do we really need to hire a car?

Hi, we’re hoping to come to the Bahamas in early November for 5 nights. We’ll have spent time with a hire car in Florida, and we’d really rather not have the expense of hiring a car here too - plus, we enjoy a drink, and are looking forward to chilling with a few beers!

Could anyone recommend the best area to stay where we can get by without a car? I’ve looked at Eleuthera but lots of posts say you really need a car to make the most of a stay there.

We love beaches, wildlife, prettiness and maybe a little history, and although we’re not bothered about a huge amount of nightlife, a handful of bars and restaurants nearby would be perfect.

Do you think I would be best to stay somewhere like Nassau or Freeport if we don’t have a car? And if so, do these heavily built up towns still retain some of the Bahamas feel, or are they very very commercial?

Any advice would be wonderful!

Thanks, Amy

Have a look at Elbow Cay (Hope Town) in Abaco. Easy to get to from Florida -- 30 minute flight directly into Marsh Harbour, then ,10 min taxi and a short ferry to Elbow Cay. The cay is compact and a great community. It's laid back, though offers lots of activities, restaurants and bars. Most is walkable, though a golf cart is the main mode of transportation (and many rentals and hotels have one included in the rate)

Lots of lovely beaches, history abound (Wyannie Malone Museum, Elbow Cay Lighthouse, and more), a lovely village-like community with friendly people, and above all, a great laid back feel! Easy to take snorkelling or fishing trips, or even a picnic to a nearby island.

And we drive on the LEFT -- like civilised people do! :-)

That sounds great, thank you! I’ll have a look - that’s exactly the kind of place we’re after!

Unless you just really want to drive you do not need a car for the Bahamas.

"Unless you just really want to drive you do not need a car for the Bahamas."

jordansbulls, what rubbish! There are over 700 islands in the Bahamas and each presents its own "lay of the land" -- while it's true that in some places you don't need a car, for others, it's essential unless you just want to sit in the middle of nowhere in your rental house or little hotel. Please don't just add incorrect or unhelpful things to posts just to rack up your post count with information that is not helpful to visitors. Thanks!

Wow, it must be a full moon with these idiot posts with astoundingly incorrect information!

It is ILLEGAL to drink and drive in the Bahamas! Make no question about this. In fact, just recently, the government has greatly stepped up enforcement of traffic laws and are using speed cameras, roadblock stops, and other methods to check for compliance. Please do not drive drunk here -- our prison is not a nice place and the embassies have a dim view of idiots -- even if they are theirs!

Ha haa even if drink driving WERE legal, I wouldn’t really fancy spending my holiday in hospital, or spending a fortune on a written off rental car!
