Spent five nights / six days at Club Med from Nov. 11-16. Went with my best friend to celebrate our 50th birthdays together . I flew Westjet from Calgary to Toronto , got delayed by over two hours due to a mechanical issue. Had prebooked a hotel close to the airport in TO and caught the shuttle. My friend met me at the hotel that evening and we caught the shuttle to the airport at 7 am for our 9:55 am flight.
Checked in and got through security in no time, had enough time to grab a hot breakfast at Finn McCools and make the long trek down to our gate.
We had no one in the middle seat going down so that was great, had a turbulent free flight.
Arrived in T & C and were through customs and immigration in less than an hour after landing.
Met the famous Diesel at the shuttle counter, waited no more than 10 minutes for a few other guests to arrive and we were on the shuttle and on our way.
Arrived to a few GOs dancing to greet us , escorted us to the theatre area and served us iced tea and did a quick intro on where to find our rooms, gave us our fob bracelets ( which we loved!) and told us our luggage would be delivered to our rooms and that we could access them at 3 pm. (Arrived just after 2 pm )
We had booked a deluxe ocean view room with twin beds and we got exactly what we’d booked. We were in the Salt Cay building which is right next to the diving and snorkeling building. It was super quiet and we had a great ocean view from our balcony.
The room was basic ( very similar to what you get in Cuba )but we knew this, the beds were very comfortable and we didn’t have any issues with bugs. When we arrived the AC was set to 25 degrees which was just too warm. We were able to set the fan to high and got the room down to 22 but never cooler.
We unpacked and changed , went for a walk around the resort to familiarize ourselves. I had to meet with the restaurant manager due to food allergies and being gluten and dairy free so we went to the reception to set this up. While there we also enquired about beach towels and were give two towel cards and told where to go to get them.
I was told to meet the restaurant manager at Sharkies beach bar for 5 pm . We got there early and enjoyed a beverage and got to meet GOs Ryan and Mauricio along with host Antonio. They sat with us as we were the only table with two empty chairs. ( Ryan convinced us to stay up to catch the new circus show that night as he was in it along with Mauricio )The manager finally showed up just after 5:45 after enquiring with the bartenders twice. Mervyn came over and introduced himself and told me he’d be at the buffet after 7 pm and to find him and he’d go over things with me.
We headed back to our room to freshen up and change for dinner. Mervyn came over to me right away and spent atleast 20 minutes with me going over everything. He apologized for not having any gluten and dairy free desserts for me but when I told him I could have sorbet he told me he’d make sure there was some at the gelato bar for me the next day ...and there was a different flavour everyday ! He also introduced me to Jackson the sous chef and told me if he wasn’t around to find Jackson and he would help me. I had no issues with eating off the buffet and having a few snacks at Sharkies for the five days that we were there.
We spent our mornings on the beach and headed to the pool after lunch most days. Our only complaint was the for the lack of chairs on the beach and at the pool. People seemed to leave their chairs occupied but not return for hours.
I wanted to go out on the snorkeling boat but unfortunately the weather turned and they also ended up having boat issues while we were there.
We enjoyed the show so much the first night that we made sure to catch it every night. The one on Monday night had us laughing so hard we were almost crying...lol
We headed to bed after the show on three evenings but stayed to dance a bit on two other evenings. We had met GO Marie - Lyne around the pool and she was wonderful , always smiling and dancing with the guests.
We had made arrangement with Provo Connections for a private tour on the Tuesday so we got off the resort for four hours. We’d also booked them to take us to Da Conch Shack for the Wednesday night beach party.
We met some wonderful ladies who were also there celebrating birthdays and on girls trips ( Hi to Crystal, Joanne, Katherine, Chris and MJ ) over dinners.
We spent the rest of our trip relaxing...
Woke up to crazy weather on our last full day there, pouring rain and windy. Packed up our beach bags and made our way to breakfast under our beach towels as we didn’t have an umbrella with us.
Spent the next few hours reading in the lobby area with lots of other guests and being entertained by Rafael who we loved ! He was the highlight of our trip...you never knew what he’d be wearing or doing 😆. We lost power but for just over an hour. We ended up being able to use the wifi and check in 24 hours in advance and book our seats for our trip home.
Returned to our room to a note letting us know that the hot water would be turned off at 10 am Friday morning to tr y and deal with the issues they had been having with it. ( would go from warm to scalding hot to freezing in a matter of seconds ).
Checked out at 10 am Friday morning even though our paperwork said 11am, resort said it was 10 am. We ended up having lunch at the resort as our return flight home was delayed just over an hour due to a snow storm in Toronto.
The airport was chaotic when we arrived, the flight was full and people were complaining about being told the wrong info on the Westjet app about the delay.
Arrived in Toronto to find out that my flight to Calgary had been delayed from 10:15pm to 11:55... finally left the gate at12:15 , arrived safely at 2:45 am, home at 3 :30am and crawled into bed before 4 am.
Overall I would return to Club Med, my friend thought it was expensive for not having any a la carte restaurants and the quality of drinks. I’m not a big drinker so the drinks didn’t matter to me. We liked that there was always something to do if you wanted to be busy. We liked that the staff interacted with the guests. The description of “ adult summer camp “ Fit exactly and we were fine with that as we are easy going people. We met a few guests who hated it and couldn’t wait to leave...I could have stayed another week !
