Where should I stay: Negril? Ocho Rios? Montego Bay...

I plan on going to Jamaica but I don't know what area to stay in. I hear you mostly stay in your hotel anyway, but what about nightlife (bars, hangouts, discos). I plan on staying at either a "Sandals" or "Couples" resort with my girlfriend. What city is the best for this? What about tours, where should I stay to do some fun tours? Convinience? I hear Ocho Rios is really nice, and I hear Negril has some good night life. What do you suggest? What is around the areas?

I would suggest Negril. You don't have to only stay at your hotel and you'll probably have more fun if you don't. Many people don't know how to handle the vendors' sales techniques so they form the opinion that its safer inside the resort. Just be firm when you say no and you shouldn't have problems. Negril is much safer than LA so don't worry about all the stories you've heard most are false or exaggerated.

Alfreds, Roots Bamboo, Mi Yard, and The Jungle are all good bars in Negril and something is usually hopping at these places. 3 Dives Jerk, LTU Pub, Chicken Lavish, and Fatties are all pretty good restaurants. Check out the honest contacts for boat rides etc.... thread it has quite a few taxi/guides and other activities listed on it and numbers so you can get in contact with them once you arrive. If you're into cliff diving there are several spots to do this in the cliffs (west end of Negril).

Negril.. My favorite.. Has fun, safe nightlife.. My fiance and I always go to the different bars/clubs.. And always feel safe.. They have plenty of tours, Mayfield Falls, YS Falls, Appleton rum tours (Treasure beach/ St. Elizabeth area), mineral springs and so much.. I absolutely love the westend.. It's very romantic, and peaceful.. I recommend you guys go up there snorkling, and have dinner at the Rockhouse.. Love the Rockhouse.. Great view and food.. I have heard tons of possitive feedback from many who have stayed at CSA (couples swept away).. I didn't find as much nightlife in Ochie as I have in Negril.. Everything is a little more accessable in Negril.. You can walk to everything on the beach.. Or take a short cab ride up to the cliffs.. I have walk it, but it can be scary for first times, roads are narrow, no sidewalks.. You'll have a blast.. Good Luck

Thanks a lot for the suggestions. I will take them into account. One more thing, Couples Swept Away and Couples Negril, are different?

Yes.. Couples Negril is on Bloody Bay and Couples Swept Away is on 7 mile beach, close to Beaches Negril and many other resorts and hotels.. Close to good eats as well.. easier to access the whole beach from CSA.. Good Luck

Just a point of intrest, couples and Sandals Resorts caters to Heterosexual COUPLES only..

The Beaches Line of resorts caters to couples, families and singles (just about everyone).

So your choice of all inclusive hotels within the Sandals group of hotels are Beaches Negril and Beaches Sandy Bay..

Thought Sandals opened up their policy to "couples" only.. and I thought that one of the couples resorts allowed singles.. Can't remember which one but I remember someone mentioning that they were getting married at a couples resort that allowed single guest.. Might be totally off on that one.. Can't remember as much as I want to anymore.. lol.. Hey and who said that they aren't a straight couple.??? If they aren't I know that hedo is more open to all lifestyles.. And as long as it's discrete, noone has to know.. Noone's business anyway..

Negril, absolutely! Much better beach than OR and MB and not as congested. Couples Swept Away allows singles.

I like Couples Swept Away but it is very quiet - especially at night. I would not choose an all inclusive in Negril. There are too many good restaurants and bars and the food at the all inclusives is mediocre at best. Look at Idle Awhile - small, intimate, and owned by the same people as Swept Away. It is in a great location - you can walk to great bars and restaurants and the restaurant there is good. You can probably arrange some tours through the hotel, but there are also some great drivers that can escort you - they know more about the island and will make sure you do what you want, rather than what the hotel wants.
