We have been looking at travelling to Punta Cana for a week in late September. When checking prices, I noticed that Covid Insurance is no longer offered. I contacted my travel agent who told told me that it's pretty much a thing of the past. She told me that you can purchase the "cancel/reschedule for any reason" waivers, but that is only for departing Canada and has no bearing on the return trip.

We are both vaccinated, but I have read stories of fully vaccinated travellers testing positive for their return trip. I understand that the resorts have accommodations for quarantine, but I wanted to ensure we weren't stuck paying twice for a return flight. Apparently that coverage isn't offered? We have full travel medical/cancellation with our charge card, but they do not cover any COVID expenses as the Government has not lifted the "do not travel" advisory. So we'd be covered for a broken leg, but not a missed flight due to a Covid test.

We seem to be stuck between a rock and a hard place. How are other Canadian travellers handling this?

@50 I know, it's confusing. If your travel partner tests positive and you test negative, do you really want to quarantine with them? Tough question. Especially when you figure that you've been sharing a room all along, and there's the possibility of testing positive yourself in a day or two.

This quote from the link in post 45 clearly states the complementary quarantine is available to guest from ANY COUNTRY.

"For guests traveling to any country with COVID-19 testing regulations in effect to enter the country after international travel, AMR™ Collection has extended the CleanComplete+ program to include quarantine support."

Thanks for clearing that up.

Clear as mud now. Still wouldn’t want to be in the situation of having to decide what to do if one tests positive and one negative. Insurance up and hope for the best I guess.

For me when and if the vaccine passports start then I will return. Knowing my fellow passengers on the airplane and at resorts are vaccinated right now is where maybe we will end up.

Who knows if it is possible or realistic.

Cheers steve

We're booked for Sept 25th, with cancel for any reason insurance up to 24 hours before departure (credit only, no refund). We are ok with those terms. We also have Covid Insurance.

Our thinking when we booked was "we're all going to have to learn how to live with this Virus, and start getting back to normal" Of course, that was before we were in the 4th wave. ugh

Did we make the right decision? Are we going to regret it? Will we even end up going?? Only time will tell.

And fingers crossed we never have to use the complimentary quarantine. We're all double vaxxed, and don't plan on partying or mingling. We just want to park our butts on a lounger, read a few books, and enjoy some cocktails.

That was what I was planning on doing but chickened out and cancelled. I guess if you are in the position where you can stay an extra 14 days it changes things. Do you really want to literally stay in your room for 14 days? It certainly does not sound like much fun. After weighing the pros and cons (over and over and over) it just isn’t worth it….too risky for me anyway. The sad part is I gave myself until Sept 7th to book last minute so I am reading all these posts and praying for a miracle which is not going to happen. I hope you will post something here when you come back to share your experience.

We've got 4 weeks to think about chickening out. Hopefully it won't come to that, but you never know.

According to my husband, I'm overthinking this. lol

The free Covid insurance is valid for any vacation completed before Oct 31. The complimentary Travel Protection coverage was available if you booked before Aug 14.

SB, if anything I feel that it is much safer to travel now then during my last trip in November. Unless flights get shut down again (I can't see this happening but who knows) if I were you, I would go. Felt fairly normal once I got there and I'm sure once you dip your toes in the ocean you will feel the same.

You're probably right Sly. I'm sure once we step off the plane and smell the tropical air we'll know we've made the right decision.

After we have this first post-Covid trip under our belt, they'll be no stopping us! lol

That's the spirit 😎. Normal to feel a tad nervous as travelling during these times is new to all of us. Totally worth it in my books especially now as things have improved and restrictions have been reduced so not stuck at home for 2 weeks like I was 😁
