Gas prices

Hi guys,

Currently in PC and we have a rental car.

Been told by a gas station employee that when you pay for gas, US$1,00 equals around 9,00 Dominican Pesos, which is way less than the real conversion, US$1,00= 49 DP.

Does anyone know if this is accurate?

Thank you!

So, the moral is don't try to use USD at Gas Stations. Get some Pesos.

Hi RV429,

That’s a good idea, thanks for your advice.

I’ll try other gas stations and see what they say.

I’m disgusted by this type of behavior!

Well you are the visitor in their country and trying to use currency that is not the legal tender of the country. When in Rome.... get peso’s, use peso’s. Some of the gasoline in the DR is of very poor quality. It’s all imported to it’s cut to go farther, be careful of where you buy gas. Especially out in the countryside.

It happens in all the islands, you did not do much research before your trip. We generally tell people not to attempt to rent a car and drive.

Will simply use DP from now on. Problem solved! :)

Been to other islands and have never had such experience...

Personally if you are rude enough to try to use American dollars when traveling in a foreign country you probably deserve to get ripped off. Do you think your gas station is going to take Dominican pesos?

It’s a service station not a change bureau. Basically what they are telling you is they don’t want your dollars and they’re going to make you pay for the privilege of expecting them to deal with currency conversion.

Carol Lee,

Rude? Every single store in PC accepts US dollars, so I didn’t think it’d be an issue to pay for gas using American dollars.

Totally unnecessary to say that I deserve to be ripped off...

LOL...most local gas stations have a USD sheet posted. I pay both ways depending on what is in my pocket. The majority of gas stations are currently giving 48 pesos to the dollar (just put $20usd in my tank 30 minutes ago @ 48rd...960 pesos).

Where did you put gas in at 9 pesos? I think you missed the 40 in front of it.

It has nothing to do with culture...USD are accepted at all gas stations locally.

Cheers,

PuntaCana Mike
