Should we hire a car or get a guide

Earlier this year we went to Grenada and while there we hired a car. We saw plenty of the island but invariably never where we intended to go because we got lost! This was because there are very few road signs following the hurricane damage. Most holidaymakers either went on guided tours or hired a local taxi and driver to take them around. We do like to hire a car but feel that we did not get the best out of Grenada which is such a beautiful island. We are wondering if the same situation exists with the roads in Antigua.

Also we are staying at Galley Bay. Could someone tell us what is the the area outside the hotel grounds. Are there any local shops or bars etc.?

Thanks.

I think that you should rent a car, Taxis are very expensive in antigua. Depending on how long you rent the car for would determine cost, the more days you rent the lower per day cost they will give you on the car, Also there will be a $ 20.00 u.s. dollars fee for an Antiguan drivers license CASH ONLY.

Although Antigua also has the problem of a lack of road signs, it is very easy to get around, the rental company will give you a map, if at any time you find yourself lost, stop and ask the locals, you'll find them for the most part to be very friendly

When driving in Antigua there are only a couple of things you need to remember, don't let the locals worry you, they drive fast and blow the horn at everyone they see, they will pass you when they are ready, watch for free roaming animals and pot holes, other than that it's a good experience to get out and explore Antigua, enjoy

We hired a car in Antigua and it was great fun, we had a 4 wheel drive and was able to go down tracks to some lovely beaches. No question would def hire a car. Antigua is easy to get round the island. During the day you can also hop on the local bus, which is really cheap.

We rented a car. In a short while I learned the proper 'beeping' 2 to go around, 1 to acknowledge. Driving the loop at night we were being followed by some 'offical' caravan with a police escort. We hit one of the villages and the seemed to have a street car exposition blocking the road. We werent able to move until the police came up on foot and started yelling. All in all great fun, dodging pothole, passing truck, avoiding goats, dogs, etc. and the beeping.
