Clothes for high elevation trails early June

I want to do some of high elevation trails this week. I know that there will be snow there. Do I need to bring winter clothes with me? Or would sweater/pullover and light jacket be sufficient?

A light layer like a fleece is probably fine. Good footwear and generally long pants are important. Do look at projected air temperatures to help you.

Have fun.

My general rule is it’s usually warm enough for shorts below treeline in the summer but if it’s above treeline I wear pants with short sleeves. I always have a medium weight rain jacket with me (or two layers if you just have a light rain jacket). You won’t need a winter coat but might want to take something to cover your ears if it gets windy. I’ve needed gloves on 14ers but typically not on lower trails.

Agreed on these suggestions. You’re going to need boots and pants for the snow. I use zip offs I can convert into shorts. For upper go with three layers: Tee, Light Fleece / Pullover, and rain jacket. Don’t forget your hat.

Always carry rain gear up high. Even on beautiful warm days, Thunderstorms can roll in quick getting you wet and drop the temps fast. Depending on how high you are there can also be strong winds so a wind/rain jacket can make life better. If I am going very high I usually stick a beanie type cap in the pack light weight and warm if the weather goes really sideways.

Good suggestions in previous posts. I would add avoid Cotten garments as they retain moisture. I live in Durango and spend lots of time in the mountains mostly below tree line. My standard clothing is shorts, button up shirt with pockets , a fleece vest and rain jacket in my day pack. Clothing is synthetic mateterials. You don't need to spend a lot of money.....thrift stores are great to find quality clothing.

Just saw you plan high elevation hikes. If you mean above tree line my suggestions would be, long pants, long sleeve shirt, fleece top. In your pack I would stash a rain jacket, rain pants, fleece gloves, and fleece stocking cap. Again no cotton.j
