The best route from Sydney is to take the M4. At the foot of the mountains just past Penrith this freeway becomes the Great Western Highway and it is dual lane all the way to Katoomba.

With only the day at your disposal, you can probably only fit in the sites around Leura and Katoomba. Naturally there's Echo Point at Katoomba and its view to The Three Sisters and Mt Solitary and beyond, but I always recommend turning off the highway at Leura and heading down to Leura Cascades first. Parking is free there, and a short easy walk will take you along the cascades and down to its bottom, with another 50 metres taking you to a stunning lookout right at the top of Bridal Veil Falls.

From Leura Cascades you continue on Cliff Drive which takes you directly to Echo Point. After taking in the view there I recommend continuing west along Cliff Drive to the Skyway. This takes you across the valley above Katoomba Falls. You can then easily walk back along the top of the escarpment taking in Katoomba Cascades.

That's 4 activities right there and you've seen some of the best the BM has to offer! For a meal with atmosphere, try Solitary Restaurant on Cliff Drive between Leura and Katoomba or any one of the cafes on the main street of Leura.

If you really want to get adventurous, there is a very scenic drive back to Sydney, by continuing west initially, then turning right at Mt Victoria onto Darling Causeway, then after about 10 minutes turning right onto Bells Line Of Road. This is a very scenic road down the mountains along narrow ridges with stunning views (not for the driver though!) and will take you all the way to Windsor back down on the coastal plain, bringing you out in northwestern Sydney, where you can end up on the M7, M2 or Pennant Hills Rd

Have a look at Jelly Bean Pool - about an hr out of Sydney - if you wanted a little break - especially if weather is hot just 5 mns off highway - a quick swim to refresh ?? There is no food/drink to buy there / have to buy from many cafes in nearby Glenbrook. Might not suit - but a nice Aussie experience
