Hi Senal,

Pookot lake, Vythiri, Edakkal Caves, Kuruva Islands, Banasura Dam, Thirunelli temple, Muthanga wild life sanctuary, etc are the main attractions in Wayanad.

November, December, January will be the peak season. Wayanad will be having nice climate throughout the year.

hi if you are going irippu falls it will be over flowing . and soochipara and meenumutty are closed due to copious rainfall in the dist . its a high range so temperature may toch min15-17 degree at night .you cant go kuruva as its closed .banasuram dams shutter are open 746mts reached max hight . you can see that . please take all kinds of warm clothes . its very windy place . you can go to pookode may be high rain may catch up in these area. you can visit lakkidi view point it will be very cold for small children in those area . take raincoats . this area recives highest amount of rainfall in kerala . and 2nd highest in india

The main sightseeing places of Wayanad are mentioned below:


Pookot Lake is a fresh water lake in Wayanad, one of the main tourist destinations of Wayanad. The weather at this tourist spot is very comfortable except for monsoon season in Wayanad (Jun to Mid of Aug). There are options for Pedal boat and Row Boat. Children playing area and a aquarium at the spot are added attractions for families. The lake, near Very close to NH-212 and almost 12 km away from Kalpetta, the district headquarter. Nearest Hotels/Resorts are at Vythiri/Kalpetta.


Banasura Sagar is a mini hydel project and the second largest earth dam in Asia. It is located near Padinjarathara. The scenic place has developed as a tourist place with great potential with the speed boat option and the beautiful view of the place. It is spread over an area if almost 1277 hector. The location is almost 21 Km away from Kalpetta.


One of the best places for full day trekking, Chembra Peak is at about 2100 meters above MSL. 15 km away from Kalpetta and very close to Meppadi. On reaching the top most of the parts of Wayanad could be seen. Chembra trekking takes almost a day. Permission from the forest dept office at Meppadi is need for visit.


Edakkal Caves is one of the most visited places in Wayand. Pre historic paintings, rock etchings are found on the walls. The caves are located on the Ambukuthi mountains near Ambalavayal. Distance from Sulthan Bathery is 12 Km and from Kalpetta 28 Km.


Kuruva Island is a 900 acre ever green forest surrounded by the branches of Kabani River tributary. Kuruva Island is good for a soft trekking and relaxing tour. Rare species of birds, orchids and herbs are seen here. The place is almost 15 km away from Mananthavady and 40 Km from Sulthan Bathery.


Soochippara Waterfalls, one of the finest waterfalls of Kerala, is a wonderful place of tourist attraction near to Meppadi. The picturesque valleys around is a breath taking view for a nature lover.


Meenmutty waterfall is close to Vaduvanchal. Reaching the waterfalls, little hard trekking is required. The Waterfall is almost 300 meter high fall and three-tiered. Nearby attractions are Kanthanpara Waterfalls and Soochippara waterfalls. Meenmutty waterfalls is almost 12 km from Meppadi.


Jain Temple, Sulthan Bathery is just close to NH-212 and almost 1 Km away from Sulthan Bathery town. It is known to be constructed in thirteenth century. The temple is an excellent piece of Jain architecture. It is 22 Km away from Kalpetta. Though, very close to highway, it is a very calm place.


Thirunelli Temple is located near to Mananthavady. It is one of the ancient temples in Kerala, believed to be as old as 2000years or even more. Pilgrims from all over come to Thirunelli temple, for ancestral rites. The rituals are performed by the banks of the stream Papanashini, which flows down from Mount Brahmagiri. Papanasini is believed to destroy sins of pilgrims who take bath in it.


One of the hardest trekking in Wayanad is Pakshipathalam which is 7 km towards the Thirunelli Temple in the Wayanad. Most of the time a variety of rare species of birds can be seen. Permission from forest department is needed for the trekking. Nearest town is Mananthavady.


The Wayanad Heritage Museum, has one of Kerala's largest collections of the remnants of an era dating back to the 2nd century A.D. The museum is situated in Ambalavayal and very near to Edakkal caves. Main attractions of this place are 2nd century artifacts, which reveal the ancient human civilization. Nearest town Sulthan Bathery at 12 Km.


Phantom Rock is near Ambalavayal Town, in Ambalavayal – Meenangadi route. The rock has a big skull head shape, hence called Phantom Rock. Phantom rock has a naturally beautiful skull head appearance which makes the tourist spot interesting for children and all ages. It is almost 6 Km from Meenangadi.


Pazhassi Raja tomb is a memorial at Mananthavady in remembrance of the Pazhassi Raja who is famous by the name “ the lion of Kerala”. Pazhassi Raja had organized a guerilla type of warfare against the British Army. In the memory of Pazhassi Raja, a park is also arranged here. Very close to Manathavady town.


Tholpettty and Muthanga wild life sanctuaries together are commonly known as Wayanad Wildlife Sanctury. The Sanctuaries are y is abundant with wild animals. Bison, deer, Langur ,Wild Squirrel , Jungle cat , Elephant and numerous birds are common sight. A two hour safari by jeep is arranged by the forest department into the park. The timings allotted for tourists to explore this sanctuary are between 7 to 9 AM in morning and 3 to 5 PM in the evening.

Muthanga WLS is near to Sulthan Bathery on Bangalore route and Tholpetty is near to Mananthavady.


Lakkidi, the gateway of Wayand is on top of ghat section while coming from Calicut to Wayanad, almost 700 meters above the sea level. The spectacular view from the spot is breathtaking. The view of the green mountainous region and the hair pin bends are worth visiting the place. During the morning and evenings, the place is generally misty. Pookot Lake and Chain Tree are very close to Lakkidi.

1. i recommend to travel varkala - a real travel crossection of kerala.if u wanna cut down travel expence . this just suggetion !!! . u can chk in google maps/ news/ guides etc and find out . coz varkala has beaches ,backwater with houseboat,estuaries,palaces(painter raja ravi varma) kathakali founder museum (kottarakara thampuran museum), british forts, 2000 Year old temples, seafoods, watersports(soul and surf.com)/ elephant rides with in avg 15km radius and nearest tea garden hillstation is just a couple of hrs drive. what else u really need as a traveller in kerala. enjoy without wasting time and money .
