3 days JNB, where to stay....and what to do/see?

hi, have 3 days at end of CPT conference in July (winter I guess? brr) and want to get a flavor of JNB. From what I can see, nice B&Bs in Livonia, Rosebank, Sandton...want to be quite close to public transport as don't want to hassle with renting a car, but also would be great to have e.g. restaurants & lively neighborhood within walking distance. Ideas please? Looks like a lot of B&Bs are in the $100-120 US range, which is fine.

....oh....and must sees/dos? As mentioned, this is a little fun "off" time at the end of a work trip, so it's not that we have chosen the destination based on what we like to do, it's that the destination is there and now we want to find out what it has to offer!

Great load of casinos in and around if that's your thing.

Soweto tour if that floats your boat.

Sandton Square is an attractive central area.

Would stay in Sandton or rivonia but forget about walking too much. It's South Africa's LA in terms of difficulty getting around.

Of the three, Rosebank is your best bet in terms of lively neighbourhood. Or Melville. Public transport isn't great other than www.gautrain.co.za which is limited in range and doesn't operate after 8:30pm. Should be something on here somewhere about taxis.

To do: http://todoinjoburg.co.za/ or www.joburg.org.za

wow, Gavin, plenty there to fill up 3 days! (actualy, 2 1/2, arrive Friday night, leave Monday night)...it seems Rosebank might be the place for us, so looking for nice B&B say US $100-150. thanks!

I would suggest staying in Sandton or Rosebank too. The gautrain can be caught from there too:). For things to see and do: You should try Soweto, apartheid museum, newtown (with museums and SAB world of beer if you like). Acrobranch is fun too. Rosebank has nice shops and restaurants. ..Nelson Mandela square in Sandton too. Go to Melrose arch for a fancy meal:)
