Storing luggage over-night at airport, or checking through?

Our group will depart the US for Malawi, traveling through Johannesburg - - we arrive late and our flight to Malawi is the next morning, so we'll be spending the night at a hotel near the airport. We have the choice to check through to Lilongwe from the US, or to check through only to Johannesburg and then re-check in the next morning. I've read several of the posts regarding luggage concerns and security.

If we elect to pick up our luggage in Johannesburg, what choices will we have? With two heavy bags per person, it would be convenient to find a secure, locked storage in the airport to avoid the logistical "pain" of hauling all of it to the local hotel. Is there such a reliable storage service? What advice do you have for us in this case? Many thanks, Tom

There is a safe baggage storage area at the JNB Terminals. It's at a low level passageway that connects the International Arrivals area to a Parking garage across the driveway.

There is a hotel connected to the airport - https://www.citylodge.co.za/cl13.php - which offers rates Room Only - or B&B. You might see if their rates work for your budget. With it, you can roll the baggage cart you have with coming out from Baggage Claim all the way to the elevator to the hotel.

There is also a Transit Hotel operated by the Protea chain that is inside the secure area of the airport. You can use it - because you are continuing on an international flight the next morning. Problem is, you cannot get your bags. They would have to be checked all the way through to Malawi. Here's the site for it: proteahotels.com/protea-hotel-transit-o.r.-t…
