Motorcycling New Zealand

Hi everyone,

I will be motorcycling around the South Island in February. On day two, I will be riding from Dunedin to Queenstown. Leaving Dunedin, I will ride to The Catlins, Riverton, then Colac Bay.

My question is: should I go direct to Mossman then Queenstown? Or is it worth going via Manapouri and Te Anau. That will add about 100 kms. I will not be stopping at those places.

I would just like to know which route has the better roads - scenery, etc. My objective is good riding roads. I prefer mountains/windy, scenic roads, etc. to boring straight highways.

Any advice will be appreciated.

Thank you

Follow the Southern Scenic Route up route 99 to Manapouri.

Do take care, vehicles don't always stay on the left when cornering and there have been some terrible head-on crashes..
