Thinking of staying 1-2 nights in Loutro September 2019. We will be driving from Kalives to Choro Safkion . Is it safe to park a hire car there for 1-2 nights. Thankyou.
Yes very safe, many people leave their car in Sfakia. There is very very little car related crime in Crete. I'm sure you'd be sensible & not leave full suitcases on show in the car anyway. There is a car park which costs a few Euros per day.
You can never be 100% sure but I would leave my car without question, taking the common sense precautions :-)
Thanks . Also is it possible to walk one of the gorges to and from loutro?
You are more than welcome and have a fabulous trip :-)
A word or two about the Aradena Gorge. JeanCrete has given you a link to an accurate description: please take note of the advice in it, that it isn't a walk for inexperienced walkers. In fact much of it isn't a "walk" at all; it involves a good deal of clambering up (or down) rock falls, and needs, as the website says, a good deal of sure-footedness. You must have good walking shoes with good grip.
I've done it both ways several times, and it IS easier to go up it than down it, as the website says.
The gorge itself, up or down, shouldn't take more than three hours, but whichever way you do it, getting to it and back to Loutro from it, makes it a full day out. If you want a shorter walk, you can do just part of the gorge, by walking up to Livaniana, the village - a little cluster of white houses - that you can see from Loutro, and follow the signs at the top of the village to the gorge. It will take you about an hour to walk up to Livaniana, an hour to walk down the lower section of the gorge to Marmara beach, and another hour from Marmara back to Loutro.
You could combine this with an afternoon of swimming at Marmara, and lunch at the excellent taverna there. Or you could walk to Marmara and up the lower section to Livaniana, and back down the hill to Loutro. You'll have splendid views of the sea, coast, and mountains along the way.
There are two other gorge-walking options while you're in Loutro. One is the Imbros Gorge, which you can access by taking the morning ferry to Chora Sfakion and the 11 am Chania bus to Imbros. Imbros is a lovely gorge, an easier walk than Aradena.
If you're still in walking mode after completing Imbros, you could take a taxi from Komitades, where the gorge ends, to the point on the road where the path to Sweetwater beach begins, spend the afternoon at Sweetwater, and then walk back to Loutro - about an hour.
Finally, the Samaria Gorge. You could take the ferry from Loutro to Agia Roumeli, where you'll arrive at around noon, with a good five hours to walk up the gorge as far as you wish, before turning back to catch the 17.30 ferry back to Loutro.
Enjoy your time in Loutro, and whichever walk you choose.Edited: 06 August 2018, 02:04
