Doing customs through multiple countries.

Me and my wife are going to be going to Tokyo, Japan, then Shanghai, China, and then to Seoul, South Korea. After that, we head back home to the United States. I am curious how customs works when you are just passing through the country without intending to leave any of your purchases in the countries we will be staying in. Do we have to declare and pay duty on the items we are taking through that are not staying in the country or do we not have to declare anything?

Duty is paid only on items you are importing to a country--ie leaving in that country. You do not pay duty on personal effects that you will exit the country with.

Note however, that make sure you pay attention to rules regarding alcohol and tobacco. Some destinations don't allow you to even bring in one pack of cigarettes without paying duty. Research each country before you go.

Just a side note - Usa here is the name of a city in Oita Prefecture in Japan. It does not refer to USA.

I don't exactly know where you intended to post this, but I suspect it's not here.
