Driving Stelvio Pass

Trying to plan a route which includes Stevio Pass, either way. Coming up from Verona Italy into West Austria, down thru Switzerland back into Italy heading for Como. Will be within 40km of Stelvio a couple of times so would like to drive it. Problem is that Googlemaps wont allow me to use Stelvio Pass either way, takes me a long way around and acts like no road there. Is Stelvio Pass generally open to public or is it a 1 way road? Will be there September. Thanks

Hi John

yes the road is open to the public in the summer apart from a couple of days when they have bike events on it. In the winter it is closed, so it MAY be that Googlemaps has recognised this and is sending you an alternative route at the moment. Have a look at ViaMichelin as this allows you to plan a route using the Stelvio/Stilfser.

I do seem to remember that they were talking about charging a toll to use the road, but I don't know if they ever put it in place.

I hope this helps you in you planning.

This earlier thread discusses the Stelvio Pass.

Check the route on ViaMichelin. Enter Verona and Passo dello Stelvio.

On another thread I notice a comment about a new road between Livigno (Italy) and Il Fuorn (Switzerland)..

This would enable a loop Glorenza (just South of )- Stelvio Pass-Bormio- Livigno-Il Fuorn -Tubre-Glorenza.

Is this road now usable an dthe loop seems to be about 120km

The problem is that google maps won't route on roads that are closed when you are mapping it..... In April the pass is closed. Change the date in the settings and it will work.

Or didn't used to let you map. Have tried it today with a departure time in January and it maps okay.
