Summer 2019 Road Trip

We are planning our 2019 holiday and we are thinking about a New England Road Trip. We will be travelling from the UK renting a motorhome and will spend 2 to 3 weeks travelling. We have done approx 2000 miles per trip on the past. Should we try to include New York City and Niagara Falls?

Thanks

You don’t do motor home in cities.

You could do something like this

Day 1 fly to Boston and rent an RV

Dat 2 to Acadia

Dat 3-5 Acadia

Day 4 to New Hampshire

Day 5-7 New Hampshire

Day 8 back to Boston

Day 9-11 Boston

Day 12 train to nyc

Day 13-17 nyc

Day 18 fly home

<<Should we try to include New York City and Niagara Falls?>>

That’s entirely up to you, but as Dan has suggested, we would advise train to NYC.

Upstate New York is not New England and heading to Niagara will pull the trip west. That being said there is a lot to see in NYS if you do head towards Niagara. We did a 19 night trip in Sept 2917, got as far west as the Finger Lakes ( I prefer the Catskills and Adirondacks) then back east to Acadia.

Thanks. I hadn't thought of the train. We've done a couple of nights in cities at the start/end of previous trips, but could start in Denver, finish in NYC. I thought Niagara might be too far West. What are the main centres in the Adirondacks and Catskills?

Don't discount the Finger Lakes in NY - NYS wine country and a beautiful area with many waterfalls and gorges.

Adirondack/Catskills towns: Ithaca makes a great base.

Lake Placid, Saranac Lake, Tupper Lake, Old Forge (Adirondacks), Woodstock. Narrowsburg, Delhi, Roscoe/Livingston Manor, Hunter, Windham (Catskills).

If you read back through some of these threads about RV trips here, you'll learn that we universally advocate against RVs - particularly in cities. Between rental cost, fuel cost, campsite cost and many other expenses, its usually cheaper to rent a comfortable SUV and stay in motels which virtually all offer free breakfast and none of the chores associated with RVs - setting up and tearing down to go somewhere gets real old real quickly after the third time you have to do it. RVs here are considerably bigger than European.

I do like the idea of touring the rural areas, then returning the car and taking the train into NYC - its the only good section Amtrak has.

Welcome and enjoy!!

Unless you are choosing the motor home /RV for budgetary reasons, I would strongly recommend hiring a car instead and staying in B&Bs in New England. That region is peppered with delightful country inns and unless you are entirely into camping, B&Bs would offer a far better way to get to know the region.

If nothing else, the hosts will be happy to advise you what to see.

A New England B&B breakfast is usually something quite different than your customary U.K. bangers and fried egg. Think pumpkin muffins, scrambled eggs with sharp cheddar cheese or even fritatta with local corn and peppers, hot apple compote ...

Thanks for all the comments. We have done motor home holidays for the last 3 years and really enjoy doing that, but we have only done the West! The NYC - Boston Train is definitely something we will look at.

If you have rented RVs for 3 trips out West, you can easily do so in rural New England!

Of course, as mentioned skip the RV for Boston & New York City.

Highly recommend Acadia National Park in Maine: amazing scenery, easy to difficult hikes, great place if you are into bicycling (can rent), boat rides, seafood! Try for minimum of 3 nights there.

You mention New York City but how about Boston? If you spend time in both cities, you could really use 3 full weeks to include Niagara Falls and spend quality time in New England. If you trek across New York,

check out the falls from the Canadian side as well.

Burlington, Vermont (my old college town!) is a great small city on the shores of Lake Champlain. Shelburne Farms Museum ("living history" type place) is located near by. You can also take car ferry across lake to, or from, New York state in Burlington.

Woodstock, Vermont is classic, quaint New England small town with eateries, shops, town green.

Newport, Rhode Island has mansions, cliff walk. Mystic, CT is nice... SO many places to choose from.

Have fun planning!
