Las Vegas to Great Basin NP - looking for a loop back

Hello folks,

i have 5 to 7 days to do a trip from LV and was thinking of heading out towards Great Basin NP. I’m looking for a loop back so I don’t have to retrace the route.

Any suggestions?

Thqnkw.

What time of year?

Where have you been before in the area, if anywhere?

What kind of options are you looking for?

Cedar Breaks and Zion could be on a return route without too much detouring.

Trip is planned for between 15-27 October and is flexible with 5-7 days between those dates. I’ve skirted Zion passing through Springdale but would be happy to go back as I didn’t spend much time there. I haven’t really done a ton of research yet. This will be our third road trip out of Las Vegas.

The first was a loop taking in Moab, Durango down to Four Corners and then Page and back to Vegas in ten days. We then did Verde Valley, Flagstaff, GCNP in six days.

I’m looking for a laid back trip with some nice NPs and small towns. Hopefully this is it.

Drive direct to a overnight in Ely ... by driving the 93/318/6. Next AM. drive the 50 to Park attractions.. I then. suggest driving the wonderfully remote 21 into Beaver UT. Should you have daylight ... Continue on the 20 East, at exit 95 to a night in Panguich. Next AM, Bryce for the AM. In the PM. drive South, on the 89 to the 6 West into Zion NP, overnighting in Springdale ... Happy trails ... carracar

Baker City is super super small. If you blink you will miss i

People either camp in the park or stay in Ely for both nights if you do the above itinerary.

There is fun places to dine such as Cell Block Steakhouse.

For more on Ely see

The drive from Las Vegas takes about 4 to 4 1/2 hours US93. Do note that this area is NOTORIOUS for speed traps.

If you want a loop back you could also consider driving highway 50 to see Virginia City, Carson City, and then loop back via Death Valley National Park. Grimes Point is also good for petroglyphs on this famous highway 50 route. Its also close enough to see Lake Tahoe and the fall colors in the Eastern Sierrras in June Lake and Mammoth Lakes.

I think you guys mean Baker, NV...not Baker City in Oregon. That's a town of about 10K. Anyway, I've stayed at the Stargazer Inn in Baker and it's fantastic.

Great Basin National Park is simply amazing

and worth the trip there. To me it's a hidden jewel have

been there several times and plan on going back.

Like Eric P we have always stayed in Baker.

I saw the Stargazer was well regarded on a travel blog. Hope I can get in!

This looks like a great trip to me and although I prefer the loop back via Zion husband is keen on Lake Tahoe and Death Valley as we haven’t been there. Would that be the route back on the 395 through Lone Pine etc?
