Route 1, Maine to Georgia

I would appreciate any recommendations to consider for an upcoming October road trip with my daughter (a new 3yo at the time of the trip.) My hope is to drive from Atlanta to Vermont with standard routes, and then return from Kennebunkport, Maine along Route 1 to the Carolinas. I am aware of the activities in Washington DC for a toddler. I am open to any ideas that can be enjoyable to a 3yo along the route. We are spending extra time in Washington DC, Boston, and Philadelphia. Also, what is the time frame to expect for Kennebunkport to the Carolinas utilizing Route 1. Yes, this is a long trip for a 3yo, and I realize she will not remember it. Life is short, and I try not to base all of my decisions on what is remembered.

Can you speak to Vermont vs Maine? The goal is the fall foliage, train ride for the fall foliage, quaint areas, etc. Museums may not be a top priority for a toddler. 😀

Is there excitement about Rt 1?

Not in North Carolina for sure. Maybe it's better other places. Here's what it looks like here:

You're not confusing it with Highway 1 in California are you? That's a fantastic road!

GP Mama, in your OP, did you mean to mention US Highway 1 from Maine to NC? I've driven it in Maine, which at first seemed like it would be a great idea, but gets tedious as it is just one small community after another with stop lights.

In a quirky, almost noir sort of way, the section I mention between Baltimore and Washington has a bit of a 1920's or 1930's feel. You almost expect to see Gatsby, Daisy, and Nick pull up in a roadster.

Oh, wanted to mention that Richmond has a great children's museum if you need a stop.

Thank you so much for this. I have meant to say Hwy 1; however, I have heard many folks discuss driving up the East coast on Hwy 1. This is helping me to realize to choose certain sections to drive (and not spend time on those with less impressive views.)
