It's an easy enough drive by car and gives you much more flexibility when you get there. Or fly and rent

Trier has a very authentic small market

1. I'd recommend reposting on the Germany and Luxembourg forums, there you will receive more detailed advice.

2. You can easily, and probably more cheaply, do this trip all by yourself without paying a tour company. Using one for a train trip would never occur to me.

The bulk of Treyn's bad press seems to relate to Italy - and are as much related to Italian Railways as Treyn and in some cases to droopy passengers

But I'd still do this on my own - whether by driving all the way, train or flying to say Frankfurt Hahn and hiring a car. Unless the tour company is doing something difficult to do on your own - like entrance to an attraction that only caters for groups or a special steam train..

I think when I did it we got the train via Brussels to Luxembourg, stayed in a hotel outside the station (good) and did train trips into France and Germany to various markets

Most contributors to TA, such as myself, are keen on independent travel and will recommend organising trips yourself.

However, if you are not comfortable with that, or prefer to travel in a larger group with others to socialise and hopefully make friends with, then an organised tour might well work for you.

If you would like me to provide specific help for you to book your own tickets, please feel free to send me a private message.

With regard to negative reviews, please bear in mind that a far larger percentage of people will go online to make negative comments than those who were satisfied with their holiday.

I travelled to Austria with Treyn last year and had a lovely holiday. I went with them again last month to Italy. Right now I've got next year's brochure out and am trying to decide which to do. I'll almost certainly go again with Treyn next year.

The main complaint for Treyn seems to be about connection times - they can seem like long waits between trains, but that's how they keep the prices down.
