If you don't want to be robbed, do not leave the house. The streets do not have any security measures. If the bad people bring something bad to the street, they do not have anything to stop them.

And if you want to warn other travellers, it might help to mention the country you are talking about.

Leaving valuables in a bag on the 'shelf' is asking for trouble. And I assume these things never happen in the original posters home country. Common sense is required as suggested above. What do you want, armed guards on trains?
