First Class rail Edinburgh to Dublin

G'day.

We wish to travel by train from Edinburgh to Dublin, in one day, and are wondering if there is a way of doing it first class ? We are getting on a bit! Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Will not be until October, just trying to get our life sorted. Thanks. Pat.

SailRail fares (combined train & ferry on one ticket for one price) only exist as standard class.

Edinburgh-Dublin for £46 or so, any day and date, via Holyhead. A bargain. www.virgintrains.co.uk

Insisting on first class means paying for an Edinburgh-Holyhead first class ticket, which could be megabucks and a separate ferry ticket. Which also means that if there's a delay leading to a missed ferry you'd have to buy a new ticket for the ferry, unlike having one through SailRail ticket where you'd be rebooked on a later ferry.

The other route is Edinburgh-Belfast for around £32, also www.virgintrains.co.uk - maybe spend a few hours in Belfast - then take the Enterprise express to Dublin, http://www.translink.co.uk/

The OP's appear to want comfort tis time, so flying might not suit them. On the other hand, the journey by rail and sea is likely to be slow and not that coimfortable either, (especially if they are prone to sea sickness), so they may change their minds.

But if they do fancy it, they can leave Edinburgh Waverley at 0652 and arrive in Dublin at 1715 with a change of train at Warrington Bank Quay. Plus the ferry from Holyhead. Standard Class should be OK for that journey.

Many Thanks those with the "Know".

We did see the 6.52 trip but were hoping for a 'softer ride'. We will have done enough flying from Oz to UK and so a train is the go. Peering out the window !!

Thanks again for the prompt and informative info.

Best thing out this Trip Advisor.

It will be a more comfoprtable ride in first class, but as The Man says, it is going to much more expensive.

Second Class on Virgin trains is pretty nice - I don't think a "free" meal and a slightly wider seat justifies the price difference.

I certainly don't either. Not in comparison to the standard class Sail Rail tickets. But it's up to the OP. They might have a lot more money than I do, lol!

A note from the OP [ which I presume is Old People??] … We have been convinced and will book on Virgin second class. If you want to see where Longreach is, in Oz-- you will see a land of battling farmers!!! LOL !! Hence will travel in a smaller seat without the 'free" meal.

Many thanks to all who have informed us of how to do it.

Hope the rains come to the UK to green the scenery!

Don't forget, you can always take your own food and drink on board the train to avoid the expensive on board catering if you travel standard class. (there's no need at all to travel first class!)

Take a little picnic, and perhaps some beer or wine, and sit back and enjoy the scenery. The train down the West Coast Main Line passes through Shap Fell and Cumbria, close to the Lake District.

And the main line in North Wales goes past the coast for most of the journey, so make sure you sit on the right handside of the train for nice views.
