Solo female 365 Days

Hi all!

Im a year or two I am thinking about taking the 365 day plunge alone..SCARED doesn't cover it!

I have travelled before for 3 months and had various holidays, but with friends.

1 or 2 weeks just isn't enough for me anymore. But, not everyone wants to or can quit their job / family for a year.

I Love the States and would plan on Hiring something like an "Escape or Wicked" Camper for 2 or 3 months.

How are the states to travel alone?

South America..

Cental America..

Canada..

Thailand..

Cambodia..

I have friends in Australia to stay with..

etc..

Problem is I couldn't get temp working Visa's as I will be just slightly! over 30.

Id love to try WWOOFFing

Hoped for Budget £16,000 / £18,000

Also, How save is it to take a small laptop/Cameras? (they are expensive ones)

Id love to hear your thoughts.

Thank You

Shelley :) xx

I bought a Samsung 8inch tablet which I use for travel. Also have one of those charger in the cig lighter you can even charge it while driving. I love it. I get free wifi on it and do all my writing and blogging on it and emails to family. Handy in hotels to search on TA for where to go tomorrow. Its light and fits in my small travel handbag if Im not going far. I have it with me at all times. I have other cameras also, but the camera on the samsung tablet is great and easy to upload from it to my blog. I upload games and play them while waiting for long delays at airports and lonely nights in hotels. When low on power points anywhere or no adapter plug into the back of TV with the USB part.

Shelly..... what a wonderful adventure you have ahead of you!

Some practical tips..... There is a road trip forum here in TA that can give you more specific info on camper hire, costs, possibly routes and any seasonal driving advice that you'd need.

In this forum there is a thread and info item...Top 100 tips for Planning a Solo trip. It isn't destination specific, but other travellers here have posted lots of very useful information.

You may want to book a RTW (round the world) series of flights, and the Air Travel forum has a standing info article that you may also find useful. A reputable flight consolidator like Trailfinder can give you lots of free advice. They'd like you to book with them of course... but will still advise, even if your plans aren't at the booking stage.

There are lots of things you'll need to get sorted out before you leave, banking, international drivers licences, visa's, possibly even jabs... etc. It may help to create some sort of a spread sheet to work out what need's paying for/applying for ahead of time.

Perhaps you could also start telling friends and family that what you'd really want for birthdays, Christmas (or what ever you celebrate) is cash for your trip... or maybe foreign currency.

The individual destination forums are chocked full of current info on prices, as well as reviews, and their own forums of course. But... good quality guide books are still worth investing in, especially if you are travelling over continents. Fodors, Lonely Planet and Rough Guides are all good comprehensive guides.

Nathapushpa: The Solo Travel forum IS NOT a travel buddy forum. If you wish to contact the OP, then click on their screen name and send them a message. But, using the forum to solicit for a travel buddy (companion) will likely get your post reported and removed. And, it's a pretty scary proposition, too.
