Bad weather stories - what is your worst??

Have just returned from 5 days in Zadar in Croatia, is usually warm and sunny at this time of year but we just had 5 days of constant heavy and thundery showers, spent most of our time in cafes looking out at a wall of rain, didn't get to visit the national parks and would have booked an early flight home if the expense of doing was not just throwing good money after bad.

This seems to be a trend with us. We visited Sicily in June two years ago, should have been scorching, but the island was suddenly gripped by unsually windy and cloudy weather with temperatures plummeting, and a year ago we went to Sharm el Sheikh in March, should have been reasonably hot, but again it suffered unexpected cold and windy weather, we walked about wearing the winter jackets we had worn to travel to the airport at the UK end.

And there is always someone who will tell you that the weather was so much better last week or is due to improve the week after you leave.

Has anyone else suffered what I call the holiday curse?

Exciting and worrisome at the same time. Transatlantic cruise. 35-40 foot waves during one portion of the cruise. Gift shop displayed items trashing on the floor. On the buffet food court, large décor planters, dishes, food items, etc. and several falls due to sudden shift of the ship. Promenade deck closed off and doors closed due to height of water ergo entering the ships lobby. If you recall the TV show "Victory at Sea" with the Navy ships thrashing about on the North sea, that what the experience was like. Happy travels!

Very interesting question monroeessex,

I have to say that Jill and I have been very, very fortunate in regard to travel and weather for some time now. Have had a couple close calls with destinations having bad storms just prior to our arrival but with clear nice weather during our visits.

Similarly, we have flown out of Hong Kong as a typhoon approached, escaping the city before massive flight delays set in. On two other occasions over the past 10 years or so, there have been typhoons hit Hong Kong causing businesses to shut down and schools to close, while we have been away! We've been very lucky in these regards.

Our guest house in Brazil was struck by lightening during a ferocious storm and as our room was the highest point of the building, we were the ones struck. The crash of the accompanying simultaneous thunder was deafening and sparks flew out of the electrical sockets! My ipad charger was killed , luckily the ipad nor the phoen was actually plugged in and the power was out for quite some time as well as blowing up the modem in the place....
