Scam Alert : Phone Calls Supposedly from TripAdvisor

It's a scam.

Over the last few months TripAdvisor members have been posting on the Support forum asking if the phone call telling them they have won a trip, or offering them a cheap travel deal was real, or a scam. Some people have also reported receiving faxes at their office or place of business. It seemed only to be Canadians reporting the phone calls, but over recent days Australians have started asking on their city forums and have reported receiving them too. The scammers are just using the trusted TripAdvisor brand name.

TripAdvisor Staff have stated that these calls are NOT coming from TripAdvisor, and the TripAdvisor Legal Team is investigating. Please just hang up, and report the scam calls to your State Consumer Affairs Office.

No need to wonder, that's exactly what they want - they hope you'll wonder enough to do whatever they want you to do. Mostly, I suspect they want to grab hold of your personal details or money, but I have no intention of finding out which it is.

There is no prize at all, of course, so you haven't missed out on anything. I wouldn't advise putting your email address on to any post in a public forum, by the way. You're just inviting a lot of spam.

Hi Pat,

Glad you didn't fall for their scam. It does sound tempting, and when people hear the name TripAdvisor they feel it must be legit. The scammers want people to feel secure with that brand name and get your details as RojBlake mentions. Then there would be requests for more money to upgrade the "prize" holiday and get the dates you wanted. It would end up being a costly exercise and probably no holiday at the end of it.

Now you have found our Bargain Travel forum I hope you take the time to read through its Top Questions section, near the top right-hand side of this page. There is lots of useful information on trip planning, how to make bookings, how to deal with hotel booking websites, how to book flights, bargain travel tips, information on travel insurance and ideas to save a bit of money when booking your holidays. $900 free holidays don't just magically appear, it does take a bit of research and know-how to plan a quality trip and save a bit of $.

There are many forums on TripAdvisor where you can read, research, ask questions, read reviews of tourist attractions and hotels, read travel guides and Top Questions links. That's how many of us plan our trips and there are many helpful volunteer forum contributors ready to help. Here is the forums homepage link to save or bookmark-

I hope you enjoy using TripAdvisor.

It's probable that the only thing anyone will win from these calls is an empty bank account. They have been around in the UK in one form or another for many years, and some have indeed been fleeced of a lot of money.
