Implement thumbs up/thumbs down for forum posts and replies.

Too many unhelpful comments and very little moderator engagement. This would allow for users to quickly scan for the most helpful replies while also allowing moderators an easy way to find the red flags within threads.

Possibly so,é good could come of such, but then I fear TA would just become another FaceBook - though some might like that.

Just my feeling in such,

What may be unhelpful to some, may be very helpful to others.

When I inquired about things to do in a city we were about to visit last year, one well-meaning person piped in about this huge shopping outlet, and a casino nearby. In my question, I mentioned that we love Museums, Botanical Gardens, Historical Houses, etc., so her suggestion was way off base. I kindly told her that “thank you, but we have outlets and casinos where we live, so that is not what we are looking for”. I never would have, but could have (if your idea had been implemented) then given a thumbs down for her input.

About ten posts later (on same thread), another person, who was planning on coming for a visit, wrote that he was delighted to hear about a casino nearby, as they love casinos, and his wife likes to shop, so the Outlet Center was good news, also.

So, there you have it.

Hi

If it was implemented whilst some people would use the tabs properly some would I fear abuse it on certain forums

We already see this with some reviews where any negative review of certain property gain a huge number of helpful, votes simple because those people who do not like the property and / or brand with vote for anything negative being said about it

Some years ago, Adobe Software added similar to their Photoshop, Illustrator, Encore, Premiere and After Effects Forums.

Only the OP could register: “Correct Answer,” or one of three “Helpful Answers.”

Few OP’s used it, and when they did, they too often chose the wrong answers to award??

As I have not been a MOD there in years, I do not know if they still have those.

If implemented here, I would limit the ability to award replies to the OP - but, so many threads get tagged onto, so how could those late-comers vote?

I think that it would deteriorate to what TA has with Helpful Votes, with Reviews. Some folk get all of their FB friends to give them HV’s, to the point that it is humorous.

I’d need a “heap of convincing,” before I would vote for such, sorry.

I watch my helpful votes rise everyday. Then"wham" TA takes away 25 to 30 votes. I guess TA doesn't like their reviewers to be successful.

Oh no, Calicoboy. I don’t believe it’s TripAdvisor not wanting reviewers to be successful. It’s more likely, that those votes came from non-members, and you do have to be a member to vote. So, they make those periodic adjustments.

I had understood that you were moving to yelp, where they were giving out free beer for reviews.

Thumbs down from me too.

I come on here to try and be helpful. If my efforts got a thumbs down I wouldn't be bothered to give my free time and experience. I doubt many would.

Also how would you feel if all your replies got a thumbs down? Do you think that people would get vindictive with it?

And yes, what is right for one person in a reply isn't right for another

It's fairly personal on TA. Many people post regularly to help others and you get to know them if you hang around.

If something doesn't fit in an answer given to you ignore it and move on. Though it would only be kind to thank the person anyway for bothering to read your question and take time to reply. If you don't you'll find the most experienced people won't bother to reply next time you ask for help.

I never understand why people want to vote on things and say it’s useful or not useful or not quite what they needed or totally irrelevant to them. What is the person who wrote the reply supposed to do, research more for you, or try harder to please you and be more useful and helpful next time. I would just walk away and not bother if people voted on my replies.

I answer because I want to try and help and would hope that my little bit of volunteer effort is appreciated. I don’t want to be clicked and given a thumbs down. Maybe they could just do their own research for their own trip if they don’t like the answers given by other members.
