You would need to let us know which airline you are travelling on?

Airlines differ in their policy regarding advance seat selection. Some let you choose the moment you make the booking, others check your fare basis, still others make you pay, and if you are a frequent flier of status with the airline, you might get to choose regardless.

Flying to Rome from Washington DC in May. Our assigned seats are way in the back of plane by bathrooms. We are not frequent flyers and wondering if we can get them changed to somewhere better? If so, how do I go about it? We purchased our tickets 3 mos in advance from travel agency.

Again, you'll need to say which airline you're flying with. Most airlines have info about selecting seats on their website. Did you check there?
