Boeing 747 vs 777?

All else being equal, should I prefer 777 over 747 in economy for a 14hr flight?

Thanks all!

I flew Adelaide/Singapore/Johannesburg and Cape Town/Singapore/Adelaide on a Singapore Airlines(SQ) 777 last year and found it to be very comfortable and spacious even for me being over 6'0. Am planning trip to the US/Canada next year with SQ and will use their 777 service instead of the 747 between SIN and LAX. I've also seen comments that passengers find that the 777 is less affected by turbulance, but I guess that just depends on how bumpy it actually is.

I think alot depends on the seat configuration and this will depend on the airline. Whilst generally in Y 747's operate with 3+4+3 configuration, 777 operate either with 2+5+2 (e.g. United, Malaysian), 3+3+3 (e.g. Singapore) or 3+4+3 (Emirates).

wow...i've also wondered about this, since i plan to return to Indonesia from the US in April, and not having flown since the 90's, was wondering what the difference was...i guess i will look into that LAX to singapore route on the 777 (or EVA's LAX to Taipei route on their 777) to get part of my trip home...thanks, everyone!

Definitely 777! Modern aircraft, B747 is old!

I always opt for the newest plane, and in this case it's the 777. I believe ANA has a brand new Premium Economy product to Japan.

Hmmm. 747s are still coming off the production line. There are quite a few 777s in service that have been flying longer than some 747s!

Hi there

Reading through the posts, it sounds like many of you would make your preference on the age of the plane rather than 777 vs 747.

Am now curious (and not being facetious)- How do you find this out?

From the model, actually I prefer B747 over B777. B747 is the king and will always be.

I recommend B777 because on a 14hrs flight, the seats and comfort will be much better than those on B747.

The only 747's still coming off the line right now are freighters until the new 747-8 comes out which is destined for Lufthansa as the first passenger customer.

As mentioned though...there are some 777s that are older than some 747s but most of the airlines in question have a younger 777 fleet than their 747 fleet.

So if you had to bet then their 777 would be a newer airplane more times than often.

___________

That's completely bunk. It depends on how the airlines configure the aircraft in question.
