Travel to spain with almost expired Australian passport

Hello, We booked a vacation to Spain and were supposed to travel in 3 days. My husband just realized that his Australian passport expires 2 months after our departure date from spain. We read that the rules is 3 months. How rigid are they with this rule? Should we risk it? We talked to the airline they said we will be able to board the plane but we might face issues in spain. Can you share your experience please.

How rigid are they with this rule? - Why have rules if you don't think they will be enforced

Should we risk it? - Your choice but you don't really have any other option unless you can get a new passport within 3 days.

We talked to the airline they said we will be able to board the plane but we might face issues in spain. - I suspect you could get a different response at the airport, You are not eligible for admission and airlines will not normally let people fly as they are liable to return the passenger and a potential fine if they are denied admission due to not satisfying the admission criteria.

They are 100% rigid with the rule. There is no point in risking it.

"We talked to the airline they said we will be able to board the plane but we might face issues in spain"

Terrible advice from that airline rep. When you show the passports at check in you will be denied boarding because your husband's passport is not valid for entry into the Schengen Area. If the airline did board you, you would be denied entry on arrival in Spain and flown straight back home, with the airline facing a several thousand dollar fine for flying you there in the first place. That's why the airline won't allow you to board.

Your husband needs to make an emergency appointment and get his passport renewed IMMEDIATELY. I don;t know whether it's possible to turn that around in 3 days (it is in the US with a personal appointment at a passport office and in the UK, both same day). Otherwise you'll need to postpone your trip.

Good luck.

many airlines use Timatic to check the requirements when they check you in

Timatic shows -

Document Validity:

Passports and other documents accepted for entry must be valid for a minimum of 3 months beyond the period of intended stay.

how quickly can he get a new passport?

3 weeks to get a new passport. It is impossible to get it before our flights. Do you know if there are any exception to the rules? Noting that we are travelling as a family with a child and we bought our tickets back

Do you know if there are any exception to the rules? - No

If you cannot get a new passport in time the only option you have is to talk to the airline about rescheduling your flights

The check-in system uses TIMATIC to confirm that your paperwork is in order. Telling a check-in agent that "the guy on the phone said it will be ok" will not make any difference.

Doesn't look like you get a same day service in Australia but the details of the priority service are here, and there is a number to call: https:/…urgent-applications.

OP, I’m not too sure why you are not understanding that there are no exceptions. I doubt the airline will let him board the aircraft. Airlines are heavily fined for flying passengers who are denied entry.

It is always the passengers responsibility to check their travel documents.

Emergency passports are a thing in most countries. Check with your embassy. We got a Canadian one the day before travel to Asia with no issues.

We contacted the embassy, unfortunately there is no such service here
