While I have found memories of the 747 I have avoided them as I have found them to have a high rate of mechanical delays.

It will be a little sad to see the number of 747s in service diminish - an iconic plane that did a lot to revolutionise plane travel when it was introduced. But then again nothing lasts forever.

I have only once, in well over 100 flights on 747s, been delayed by a mechanical fault. I love them and will be very, very sad to see them go.

I would consider the B777 the flagship but whatever, nothing will ever be as special as the true queen of the skies the 747.

The A350 will be Delta's biggest airplane with the 747 retirement so seems natural that it would take over "flagship" status, such as it is.

Does the 350 have the range of a 777?

When the 747 was introduced and for years after it was the longest range widebody.

I have nothing against Airbus just curious as to why it got the title.

Yes, and more. At standard pax capacity.

777-300ER - 7,300nm or 8,395sm

A359 - 8,100nm or 9,315sm

Interestingly the A350 has a specified range greater than that specified for the 787-9 (7,635nm/8,780sm) but the 789 is performing much better.

^^^^^^^^ Just for completeness, the 777-200LR has a longer range than the A359, at 8,555nm/9838sm. However the 77L is a gas guzzler and hence was a poor seller.

Had what i suspect will be my last 747 ride the other day on KLM AMS-SFO. Majestic aircraft and lots of nostalgia. But not much comfort. Been on a few KLM 747s the last few years. Configuration very old school. Very old entertainment systems.

My very first international flight was Pan Am JFK-FCO in 1989. Had a first class seat with dinner upstairs. Very elegant. Flew during Continental's piano bar era. Lots of memories.

But welcome the new era with more modern aircraft and looking forward to my first 787 flight this February on United.

Just be aware that the 787 is just another plane. It's much newer and the IFE (on UA as well as Tuohy) is great but it's still just a plane with a tight 3-3-3 in economy. United does however provide 32" seat pitch in E- which is very good by today's bog standard economy.
