Buy two seats in one name SYD - YVL return

Hi, is there any reason why I can't book two seats in one name to get some extra room flying Sydney to Vancouver return (probably Air Canada (although prefer not) or Air New Zealand (anything direct)? I know I'd have to find seating where there are only two seats and/or the arm rest lifts up but it would be a lot cheaper I think than Business class or premium economy. I cannot sleep unless I can lie down (even if I'm scrunched up over two seats). I saw something ages ago about Air NZ offering 'twin seating' but this was only an 'at check in' option and I want to know I have definitely got my two seats. Can anyone help?

From what I've read this option is only available at check-in, but it might be worth a call to Air NZ to find out if this could be done earlier, for example in the case of an obese passenger.

This article ( https:/…two-seat-air-travel-obese from 2010) has the following statement: >> Air New Zealand expects passengers who know they require additional room to buy an additional seat to get the space they require. << however has no information about HOW a passenger can buy an additional seat.

I don't think they are available on AKL-YVR (but I also haven't checked) but have you priced a "Skycouch" for AKL-LAX for a single person? It may be cost-prohibitive, but you could make a reasonable comparison to the price of a fully-flat Business class seat.

Call the airline. Many will allow you to purchase two seats.

Just out of curiosity I did a dummy booking MEL-YVR - I know it should have been SYD, but the AKL-YVR leg is what's important - and you can get a Skycouch on this route.

I don't know when you want to fly but I used dates next February, the ticket price is about $1200 and the Skycouch is an extra $1200 each way = total $3600. Same route, same dates PE = $3000, business = $6300 (approximately).

So the same flying time whether SYD/YVR or AUC/YVR, but you toss in another 3 hours SYD/AUC plus connection time? Or suggest LAX which means another set of border protection requirements which, in my experience at LAX, can be a nightmare.

Wouldn't one Premium Economy ticket be easier? Check PE vs regular economy fares. Both AC and NZ have true premium economy.

Thanks everyone - food for thought and I will check out the Skycouch option with Air NZ if it flies direct from Australia but as Frommy said, no point adding even more time to the trip if I have to go via Auckland. Thanks to to AussieGirl for looking up some comparison prices - very much appreciated!

As far as I am aware all Air NZ flights go via AKL as that is their hub. QF may have direct flights SYD-YVR.

Air Canada fly direct SYD to YVR daily, but AFAIK the Qantas direct service is only seasonal.
