The first sign you read as you enter says something along the lines of: "respect staff and each other, and follow staff instructions"... As if we were boarding a passenger airplane or vessel. Not very welcoming or good way to start. Secondly, my nan &...I arrived at 13:00 (reservation orig. booked for 12:30 but had to push back to 13:00 on the day). We arrived and the Landlady loudly greeted us and made an absolute meal out of the fact that we had arrived a little later; and continued to say that "everything (bookings) was in place and it was going to be tight, but they could still help us out"... (at least 80% of the pub's tables were empty - and had no reservation signs on) and did not proceed to fill up either. Then comes the young lad with zero welcoming or customer service skills. No hello, no smile, nothing. I don't blame him for this, or want to put any blame on him: it's just clear that he hasn't been trained properly in the basics of customer service. My nan & I greeted him with a "hello" and he literally said "what can I get you two". The beer that I initially went for was the English Pilsner - which tasted awful and I don't mean that I just didn't like it, it tasted worse than draft beers from Wetherspoons that I used to drink as a teenager that left me with a heavy head, funny tummy and no positive vibes at all. It was a dark and flat colour; which Pilsner shouldn't look like. I took it back and the Landlady offered me an alternative beer. I chose an Amstel (again, should be a golden, light & crisp colour) - it tasted, and looked EXACTLY the same as the previous pint. For this to happen, it must be old barrells (and I mean closer to expiry date than I mean being attached to the pumps and being used) or that the lines aren't cleaned properly or often. Obviously and understandably the Landlady is going to defend her product and her practices; I get that. But there are certain situations where you have to either put your hands up and provide service recovery or just cut the bullsh*t. There was an answer for everything. I know we are in the countryside but all I could smell was ____. Apparently, all in that Friday morning before trading, she had changed the barrels to fresh ones, cleaned the lines AND tested them... Even more desperately, she told me that she had two customers in "this morning" who had Amstel and said how good it was. Oh what a coincidence, hey? I'm telling you it was that bad the Amstel that I had to leave at least 2/3rds of it: and the 1/3 of it was painful to consume. Thank god my grandmother had the brilliant idea of ditching this place and going elsewhere to lunch. No atmosphere, an overly loud and slightly manic bartender and generally poor customer service. I don't write this review as an attack or out of spite. I write it as a platform for the Landlady to hopefully improve these aspects of her establishment. If not, keep dining your walkers & locals at 20% capacity on a Friday lunchtime.More

We ate here whilst staying at a nearby property for the weekend. The hospitality from the Landlord Chef and the Landlady were very welcoming and the food was wholesome and tasty. It is a locals pub but they made a fuss of our old labrador...with the chef even bringing out soem steamed turkey for him. We didnt use it but the skittle alley looked good fun. Plenty of parking.More

I eat here regularly and it deserves a good review, best steaks in the area, consistent quality. Other specials you dont get in other pubs around here as in the usual boring menu.

We booked lunch here for after a morning visit to Lordington Lavender Farm and it was perfect. A lovely shady garden to enjoy lunch in after being out in the open on a hot day at the farm. Landlady? was very friendly and helpful and...food was served promptly. We both enjoyed lamb burgers in brioche buns with tzatziki, chunky chips and coleslaw. I'm not normally a fan of chunky chips but I think she said they were triple cooked and they were good! No room to test the desserts as we'd had ice creams at the farm beforehand!More

We visited for lunch during the week and were really impressed with the quality and portions of the food especially the sirloin steak which was very tasty. The pub itself is spotlessly clean and the staff were welcoming, friendly and efficient. The landlady was very...knowledgable about allergens and was more than happy to talk us through the various gluten free options and substitutions possibleMore

Real gems, the pub and the landlady both! Good beers and a great selection of well chosen whiskies. The food is best possible, high quality, modern pub grub with something for everyone, whether Foodies to Families. There's nowhere better for a relaxed but efficient lunch...stop.More

Not one to often leave a review, but this is probably the best pub food I have tasted in a long while, I would recommend this pub for midweek food

We went for dinner here on Saturday night and had such a lovely meal. It was steak night and my rib-eye was decent, loved the jalapeño poppers and make sure you have the croissant bread & butter pudding! The landlady is brilliant. So welcoming and...nothing is too much trouble. And the chef comes out to say hello (and make a fuss of any dogs! Our pup certainly appreciated the attention). We’ve had a few roast dinners here of a Sunday too and always thoroughly enjoyed it. Sweet little garden. Again, the effort the proprietors went to during Covid was really appreciated. Great pub, great people.More

Don’t write this place off if you are disabled. I have MS and use a mobility scooter. It’s true the car park has stones but they are so compacted it was easy to navigate. The landlady opened the side doors for us so there was...step free access. I did need the toilet and it’s true there is not a disabled one. With the help of the landlady I was able to drive straight into the gents and use the toilet there while somebody stood guard! It’s not ideal but it’s a good solution. A very good selection of food which was cooked beautifully. I had homemade salmon quiche which was delicious. All of the staff were lovely and polite and very helpful and nothing was too much trouble. An absolute delight thank you.More

Met here today for a old work friends reunion lunch after doing the alpaca walk nearby . The landlady gave us such a warm welcome and was extremely accommodating for our party. One of our friends is an electric scooter user . The landlady went...above and beyond making her very comfortable in accessing the pub and facilities . The food was delicious and a great choice on the menu . Would definitely recommend this delightful pub to all and hope to visit again in the not too distant future .More

Popped in today while on a country walk for a drink, and the delightful aroma from the kitchen inspired me to request some chips, despite the chef being busy with lunchtime customers, the staff went out of their way to accommodate our request, and we...were served with delicious food in the garden at a very reasonable price as well as treats for the dog. It makes a very pleasant change these days to receive this level of service without having to spend a fortune, would highly recommend and will return, Thank you.More

This pub is not disability friendly. The car park has uneven gravel full of large stones and I was unable to push my wheelie Walker to get to the garden. There are steps into the back room. There is no disabled toilet. When I asked...I was given a curt ‘no’ from the woman who’d taken our order. It would have been nice to be told a disabled toilet is planned. Also a paved path for wheelchairs and wheelies would help access. For these reasons I will not be returning.More

We went with friends to celebrate a birthday, we knew that we would get great food there as we have been to the Barley Mow many times before. The staff are friendly, keen to please and extremely polite. Our meals were, as usual, cooked to...perfection and best of all, we were left to enjoy them in peace, without the waiter popping up every five minutes asking if everything was alright, which is most annoying when you are enjoying your company and the very well cooked food. The Barley Mow is well worth a visit if you are looking for great food and a friendly atmosphereMore

From memory...a fairly standard pub menu...steaks, scampi, fish and chips etc. - but all well presented and served in good quantities. Dessert selection is excellent in our experience too.
