I have had the privilege of visiting the Test Kitchen over a number of years, just been back post re-boot & have been blown off my feet. The 2 stage experience is interesting & beautifully executed. Perfectly balanced cocktails on offer to accompany a variety of local ‘bar snacks’. After being ushered through the porthole from Dark to Light, we... More

There is a 9, yes nine months, waiting list for this restaurant; so if you want to go; book well before you leave the UK. We managed through our hotel concierge to get a cancellation; we were lucky. When you arrive, you arrive in the "dark room". Now I don't know about you, but when I go into eat food... More

The "new" Test Kitchen involves two rooms, first, on arrival, a "dark" room where one can choose two cocktails and is served some small snacks. An interesting concept, but one drink might be more appropriate along with an ability to control the time spent on one's pre-dinner drinks. Diners then move into the "light" room for the main dining. Dinner... More

I have been fortunate enough to dine at many amazing restaurants all over the world and this may have been my best experience to date. The tasting menu was interesting and keeps you captivated throughout the entire evening. The wine pairings were very well paired and interesting. I am typically not a cocktail drinker, but the cocktails that were paired... More

Well worth the effort of securing a booking. We thoroughly enjoyed the adventure of starting in the dark room where everything felt intense and then progressing to the light room where dishes are more complex. Watching the chefs as they work in the open kitchen is enthralling. We were worried that the amount of courses would be too much but... More

Went to the Test Kitchen last year and had a fabulous meal which I would have happily scored 5+++. Went again this month having told my friends how wonderful it was and we were all totally underwhelmed. It's just too many dishes and I defy anyone to remember more than four or five of them. The food was good but... More

Went there on 18th January this year....after booking from London on 1st December...up at 0545!! Arrived in their 'dark room' and had 4 cocktails and 4 'bar snacks to begin....between 2 of us. Great snacks.....cocktails a bit too strong for me.....especially when you see what's coming in the 'light room' Dramatic move to 'light room' and began our 8 course... More

This was our second time dining here and our first after their recent renovation. Not wanting to spoil the surprises (there are lots) for readers, but the beginning of the evening involves not one but two cocktails and they pack a punch. Follow those with a flight of wine (the epic wines were, well, epic!) and you have to be... More

What a nice surprise in Cape Town. We've been there to celebrate my birthday. Seated at the counter, we were served one of the best meal I had in life. We could feel the stress at the kitchen and, still, how natural the colours, textures, scent and flavours would be combined into simple and attractive dishes. Magic.

We were fortunate enough to secure a reservation for 8 people to dine the last night of our two week South Africa trip. For those gourmet/foodie types, this restaurant is not to be missed. You start off in the dark room, where you are served two cocktails and six appetizer courses. Each more interesting and well assembled than the next.... More
