The alpine restaurant is the buffet restaurant of the hermitage hotel. Price per person is NZ$ 70. Variety on the buffet is great with great assortment on seafood, vegetarian options and plenty of meat dishes. Buffet is not changed during the week however, so can really only do it once if you stay more than one night. If you are ahead of the big Chinese/ Japanese groups that are brought by bus the buffet is actually very nice. Once groups are there atmosphere becomes very buffet style with all the typical downsides. Make sure you get a table close to the front window with a amazing view on mount cook.

We had the pork belly as a starter, was bordering on cold and had little flavour. Mains were alot better, they were warm and reasonable tasty, although we had to ask if they were actually going to be served. It was an hour between starter and the mains arriving. Service was good and came with an apology, for leaving us waiting. Not in any rush to go back.

We did not eat in the restaurant due to the lack of choice on menu. Did have breakfast, service was slow, breakfast was average - the bacon was very hard to cut through. It would have been lovely to have seen salmon on the eggs Benedict rather than ham, avocado smash as an option or even french toast! All saved by the stunning views and friendliness of staff.

Went there tonight with the family. My wife and I ordered entrees and mains, and the kids ordered mains, with desert to follow. After 20 minutes, we ordered a couple of wines and drinks for the kids, plus I also asked for water (surprised it wasn't delivered). About 5 minutes later our entrees arrived. I said to the waitress that could we get the water as well please, and she left to get it. Mean while another waitress arrived and was pouring my wife and my wine and the carafe of water was literally smashed down onto our table. Nothing said, just smashed down, literally shaking everything on the 2 tables, and walked away. Even the waitress pouring the wine was shocked. Had our mains and the kids and my wife wanted desert, waitress nowhere had to ask someone else, then got desert but no cutlery. Which we had to ask for again. We didn't wait around to see if they would ask if we wanted coffee. A real pity as the food was great but the service soured the evening for me.

We ate here on our one night staying at the Hermitage. The restaurant was busy and maybe that was why the service wasn't what it should have been. All staff were friendly and tried to be helpful, just the timing was off at times. The food though, was amazing. Starters of pork belly and salmon were generous and delicious - the main NY striploin just as good and worth every cent.

the service was fantastic. Not a large menu ,but what we had to eat for our dinner ,both evenings, was beautifully served, well cooked and very yummy. The tables are well apart, comfortable seats ,and the view was unbelievable. Watching the sunset over Mount Cook through these big windows I will never forget. The people who served us were very friendly . The whole atmosphere is something I will always remember.

We had dinner at this restaurant and were lucky enough to get a table next to the window giving a brilliant view of Mt Cook and surrounding mountains . The food was very good . Service was a bit patchy but we will give them a pass on that in these tricky times . All in all a very nice meal in a very special place ....and the view .WOW , WOW ,WOW

After numerous email requests, & attempts for someone to contact us (over a couple weeks) re: trying to make a booking for lunch, from us in Brisbane, we FINALLY received a reply. This needs to be reviewed. ON Saying This, lucky we had persisted with a booking as it was packed out. The Buffet Lunch was well worth all the trouble and excellent food, very fairly priced also. All seating downstairs in the Alpine has wonderful views of snow covered peaks of Mt Cook. ~ Just a hint, ask for seating below the bar area, its quieter & better suited for couples ~ The clouds came & went & the sun graced us numerous times so ample time & opportunity for some spectacular photos. The 50kms drive in from hwy is also very scenic & an easy one. Loved this part of our trip. Thanks.

Despite booking table 2 months earlier for 2 at 6.30pm we were placed on bad table with no view and not in the main part . The food was average but still we enjoyed it . The service was a big let down and really does lets the hotel down . Basically no service - no one cleared our plates , no one came to table to take drinks orders . No cutlery - I had to wander around looking for some eventually taken from other tables. Since it is the only food option it was disappointing . We were guest of hotel

We weren’t guests at the hotel so had only limited choice for dinner 5 pm or 8 pm. The staff are multicultural the Chinese waiter who checked us in gruffly informed us that we needed to be out by 7. 7 pm was ample time his attitude didn’t impress me snd I feel he could have put a professional way of informing guests. Our waiter was lovely he was Turkish and the buffet had lots to offer it was lacking in flavour. I had the roast lamb with roasted veg and red wine jus. I am an amateur and though the lamb was cooked to perfection it lacked flavour. Perhaps the lamb was sourced locally. Also my husband and I both agreed that the waiter staff had bad breath. Our table was perfect right on the window taking in the breathtaking scenery. A downer was that I was sitting pretty much on top of the heater. This made dinner less enjoyable. Don’t go for the cold seafood as it was tasteless and I felt probable frozen tooling, not fresh at all. The magic moment of the night was the breathtaking views. Your better off not going here and supplying your own food coming on a BBQ with a nice bottle of red.

It's a typical buffet, amazing view, smart looking staff and aesthetically good looking overall. Didn't make a reservation, so we just arrived around 7:30pm and waited 15ish minutes (went for walk). Too expensive for what it was, and I'm not just saying that as a young person. $55 pp, and while the food was great and all you can eat, it was not quite worth that much; maybe ~$40. It's typical western style food, lamb, steak, salmon, some salads etc. All taste good but nothing too special and their attitude seems to be ever so slightly above what they really are. But it's one of the only decent places to eat there, and as long as you're not on too tight a budget, it is a fine experience.

We’ve just enjoyed dinner here on the $57 2 course meal deal plus we added 2 sides. Both courses were served promptly and service was exceptional. Couldn’t fault! Food was great and cooked perfectly!

Not a fan of buffets in general, and wish there was an a la carte option instead for a few reasons. I am normally not a big eater, but when you pay $65 you feel like you have to get your money's worth by just gorging. Would've much preferred to have ordered just a single dish - it would have been more pleasurable. Also not a fan of, in a pandemic world, maskless people coughing and touching every single pair of tongs. For this reason we did not opt for breakfast buffet as well. That being said, the food was nice, and the room is beautiful.

Staff were polite but lacked basic skills such as meal checks, getting orders right, or follow-through. The food looked fancy and tasted good. For the premium they charge for service, it's not worth it. However, I think they have a monopoly on food in the area for people who do not want to self-cater. :(

Heard great reviews about this restaurant from friends, tried to book for a Monday night for a special dinner, and apparently only open to those staying onsite. Very disappointing when you try to book ahead. The lady also wasn't very helpful.
