My partner and I dined here when staying in the Mt. Cook Village. Unfortunately the food took quite a while to come out and the steak was heavily overcooked. The salad had far too much dressing and the sides (at additional cost) were quite average. I feel as though the menu tried to be very fancy, but the food did not match. To the credit of restaurant staff, they re-cooked the steak and gave a substantial discount off the wine. There are few places to eat in the village area, so this may still be the best option for dinner.

Service was slow and not enough staff on but we had the set 3 course menu for $65pp which we felt was good value for the quality of the food received. Not huge portions but it met our needs. Views were great and if this type of food doesn’t suit you there is always the buffet next door. Staff were very friendly the

Probably the best venue in New Zealand; the panorama of Aoraki/Mount Cook that accompanies your meal isn't going to be bettered. The a la carte menu offers a prix fixe option for three or five courses and looks excellent value. We ordered off the full menu. The schnapper was the winner but the fillet of aged Wakanui beef was done to perfection. Compliments to the chef who produced a perfect sear and left the beef perfectly pink all the way through. Service was timely and attentive. I ordered an espresso at the end of the meal. I like a sugar with it but none was provided. It appeared all but instantaneously when I asked and was delivered with a smile and good humour. The staff here are from all over the planet except, perhaps New Zealand, and someone has put the time in to training them. Only compliments about the service from us.

Unlike some of the other reviewers we would be unable to recommend this restaurant. The menu is potentially good, the views are excellent, but the staff are totally inattentive and not up to the standard that you would expect at the prices charged We had to wait a few minutes to be greeted - let alone seated - despite the fact that we had a reservation and the restaurant was 2/3 empty. The staff are either badly trained or badly managed. When they were not talking to the manager behind the till, they avoided eye contact making it difficult to even get a water glass refilled. The wine arrived after the food despite being ordered well in advance, and the the Duck was a very poor cut and was predominantly gristle. It then took 20 mins to be replaced and the meal was effectively ruined. Looking at the reviews the restaurant clearly does a good job some days so I cannot understand why they were so poor on this occasion

We booked a table for our anniversary and were very warmly welcomed by staff on arrival. We were shown to the best table in the house, with an absolutely magnificent view of Aoraki as the sun set. Our waiter, Perfect, was as his name states, perfect. Attentive, relaxed and cheerful, but never imposing. The meal was very pleasant, well prepared and tasteful. I know some reviewers are a little critical of the restaurant and its prices but, seriously, this is pretty much the only show in town and it's a long way to something else. For us the important thing about NZ restaurants is to have a NZ theme or context. Why try to replicate NYC or London? The balance between good service and being who we are is important, and difficult to manage in remote locations. This worked for us. Thank you to all the staff.

We paid $57 for two courses I had a starter and main my wife main and dessert all the dishes were great I had venison for my main and my wife the duck she was impressed with her meal and raved about the dessert. I would happily pay that much anywhere for the food and service we got. You can pay for all 3 courses believe it was $77 but it would have been to much for us. Great meal, great price

While the Panorama has a lovely view of the Mt Cook area, the terrible service ruined our dining experience. After being seated with the dining room only 1/3 filled to capacity, we were left unattended with no menus and no water for an extended period. We had to ask for menus, and ask for our water glasses to be filled (rather than 1/2 a glass.) I requested the scallops served 2 ways (hot and chilled) be modified for my preference ( hot only) unfortunately that was not done. While our steaks were prepared properly, our server neglected us, and failed to visit our table even once after the kitchen delivered entrees. The server finally appeared well after our entrees were eaten to clear plates. We had several small requests during the meal which went unattended because our server never came to the table. To the contrary, the server seemed far more interested in standing behind the computer at a far off work station than attending to our table. I refused to order dessert for fear of prolonging this subpar dining experience. I blame Management for poor training of their staff and lack of interest in there customers.

We were scratching our heads about where to eat for our one night at Mt Cook. The reviews for the Panorama were mixed but we decided to visit anyway. We were pleased we did. The Panorama has been closed by management during the international travel shutdown and instead the Alpine restaurant offers 2 or 3 course set course options. The views are to die for and we were pleased with our 5:30 booking (booking highly recommended as we were surprised about how booked up it was). The service was pleasant, professional but not massively attentive. Not that this bothered us being in such a nice spot. The food was delicious. We had low expectations and are quite critical/fussy. There was quite good variety for a set menu. About 4ish options for each our appetisers and mains. The pricing was better than we expected too for the location. $50ish per person for 2 courses. What we would expect to pay at home in Wellington. We highly recommend! Also we weren’t staying at the Hermitage and it wasn’t a problem visiting for dinner.

We were seated on a reasonably quiet night with the restaurant at only half population when we arrived. We ordered drinks that took ages to arrive and had to find someone to be able to place our order. One starter was pork belly with some chopped veg in sour cream with a toasted slice of tortilla. The dish had no seasoning and the plain pork didn’t go with the side at all. The other main was scallops with chorizo, which was well cooked, although a little cold when it arrived. Again the dish lacked any seasoning. We then waited for our main courses to arrive, all the time staring at empty drinks as we were ignored by our waiter and the floor manager. The venison was well cooked, but again, not seasoned at all and had a pathetic few spinach leaves dropped on the plate as a side. The salmon was well cooked, but unseasoned. It was served on a pearl couscous with semi dried tomatoes, which - can you guess what’s coming? - wasn’t seasoned or even flavoured. There was some watery creamy goop on the side with pickled radish, spinach and baby kale. Nothing worked together and the key focus here is that there was very little flavour. It’s like the chefs were afraid of herbs, spices or seasoning. To top it off, by the time we’d finished our mains, we still hadn’t been asked for any more drinks and our water had been finished too. The floor manager also didn’t ask us how our meal was when we paid, which is usually a sign that they know that something’s wrong. We had to raise the issues ourselves. Overall, average food and poor service for the money they were charging. Definitely oversold by reception when they ask if you want to book!

Panorama Restaurant is, as the name suggests, located in a curved room with a great panorama view of Mount Cook. But even without the view, this restaurant more than makes up for the price with its top-quality cuisine and excellent service. Our server, Mr Perfect, lived up to his name with his friendly demeanour and absolutely attentive service. A truly enjoyable dining experience!

The food is amazing. So many salmon options! The vegetarian options are delicious. There are extra plates at the buffet so you can get a fresh one but there isn't fresh cutlery, so you have to reuse between plates which is disappointing. Service is a bit slow, perhaps understaffed with covid, but staff are very friendly and competent

We did not stay at the Hermitage as the rooms seemed a bit pricey but we came to the Panorama Room for dinner one evening. It had been a beautiful clear day and from our table we were able to watch the sun go down slowly on Mount Cook. The meal itself was the best we had on our stay in the South Island – and we had many very nice dinners. Plenty of choice on the menu and everything prepared to perfection. The service too was excellent – friendly and attentive. We had originally thought that the restaurant might just rely on the view and offer nothing special by way of food and service. We could not have been more wrong!

Pretty amazed that this was the best the Hermitage Hotel had to offer as a fine dining dinner option. While there were ample food choices to suit every taste, it seemed quite expensive for a buffet. My friends and I dined at the Panorama the first of our two night stay, and decided to skip the second evening. We drove to Twizel and picked up enough fresh, delicious choices for a picnic dinner...and also had two fantastic breakfasts there, instead of revisiting the buffet.

Decided to get two items out of the self serve display (pre cooked food), when paying for it I was asked if I wanted them warmed up, I said yes please. When they eventually reappeared the outsides were warm and crispy however the insides were super cold. Glad I didn't order food as I would hate to think how my stomach would feel after if this is how things are warmed.

We were eagerly anticipating this dinner, but it turned out to be a disappointment. Our reservation was at 8pm and we arrived right on time. There were 3-4 courses, and each dish took 45 mins to arrive! The server seemed to have forgot about us - customers who arrived way later than us had their food served earlier, and many of them left before us. We had to prompt the waiters several times to ask where our food was. We ended up being the last few diners to leave, at 10pm. The main dish of steak was also poorly done. This dinner was overpriced, and sorely disappointing.
