Gokarna was not on my Bangalore-Goa road trip. But because this place had such rave reviews and was run by a French couple, I decided to try and for good measure, spend a night at Gokarna to visit some places in North Karnataka.
The visit...to Gokarna was disappointing and the hotel in Gokarna (Stonewood Resorts) was a bit of a disappointment. Ravenous, tired and underwhelmed, we drove to Chez Christophe - CC.
Despite a large car and narrow roads, I managed to get to the Google Maps point in 15 minutes. However, despite several calls to the restaurant - we couldn't spot the place - because, it is not where Google says it is. From the main road, there is a 15 minute walk through "by lanes" - essentially through pathways to people's homes, angry residents and vicious dogs and open fields - before you ultimately get to Ananda Inn / Shakti Inn back entrance. And then, to the beach. And then you find CC. Thankfully, the residents of the homes were only impatient - and thankfully, held back their dogs.
NOTE - this path is NOT safe for young, old and people who have trouble walking. I would also not recommend walking in the dark - I imagine snakes to be there was well.
If you park on the road Google tells you, be prepared for no parking/tight parking. I'm told the beach route is better. 15 minutes travel time turned to an hour.
The place itself is quite nice and done up well - like lot of restaurants on Goa's beach. And unlike Goa beach restaurants - not crowded and noisy.
Despite ordering our food an hour earlier - food took a while.
Orange juice, onion soup, ratatouille and lasagna. Juice was fresh and nice. Soup was quite robust and cheesy - perhaps a little extra for Indians who are too drunk or stoned. Ratatouille was nice - with flavors reminiscent of ratatouilles from lot of French/Italian restaurants across Delhi and Bangalore. Lasagna was cold - apparently not grilled/ heated enough - the cheese was tough and the lasagna itself, chewy.
We ordered apple pie - which was more tarte tatin and that was nice. Creme brulee was.... ok - the heating of the caramel made the custard warm which was off-putting. Since their baking and breads came highly recommended, I also ordered a portion of croissant with home made jam. Croissant at a French restaurant is like parantha at a Punjabi house - an angel dies if it's wrong. The croissant had a smokey after taste like it was grilled in the wrong place. All of that was > 2k. Food is not cheap.
I have done lot of things to eat at places I liked - from New York to Amritsar and Hoskote. The stay at Gokarna was contingent on this places' success. Obviously, they did not know that. unfortunately, food was super underwhelming. Their success can only be explained by rich young folk who have presumably had too much alcohol and herbal infusions and resultant stunted tastebuds and can't tell awesome from average. If you are at the beach - do try. If not anywhere near - don't go just for this place.
Also - no masks, no credit cards.More
