Great meal, very reasonable prices, large restaurant so not squashed at all. Salted fish rice was lovely

We stopped in here for an early dinner. There seemed to be a disconnect between the prices and the restaurant fit out. We were expecting bargain Vietnamese food but it wasn't that cheap, although it wasn't overly expensive either. The restaurant decor was tired and broken, in cheap Vietnamese restaurant style, although at least the loos were clean. The food... More
I have been to Van Mai many times now. It is a spacious and friendly restaurant and suitable for larger groups. The food (Vietnamese and Chinese) is always good, freshly made and very reasonably priced. We had an appetizer platter that had several 'tastes' - spring rolls, rice paper rolls et al - and was very good. We also had... More
Fed 5 adults for less than $110. Hands down the most delicious food I've come across. I had chicken and corn soup and Singapore noodles. Made my local look bad. The portion size was perfect for one hungry person or to share, consisted of the right flavours and was well presented. Others at my table ordered, sang choi bow, pho,... More

My only complaint is the wine list which is both... More
Great place for tasty well cooked Vietnamese cuisine always busy with a cheerful atmosphere .The menu is extensive making it very hard to choose what to have for dinnerOnly problem being getting a car park close to restaurant
I have been eating at Van Mai for a good many years and watched its re-incarnation from a formica topped table cheap eatery, to the lovely place it is today. The one constant is the lovely food, always served with a smile piping hot & totally delicious, my personal favourite, beef in mint leaves, as I live a good 40k from... unfortunately, compared to loi loi's pho next door, van mai's doesn't compare well. whilst the silken rice noodles and the vegetables are fresh and delicious, the stock doesn't have the depth nor richness of taste, instead watery and insipid.
Love the quickly fried snapper. Love the cinnamon chicken. Love Minh. And his gorgeous kids. It's a little nearer the river than most of the strip but that makes parking easy and whilst the restaurant is licensed now there's a bottle-o on the opposite side of the road if you wanna nice wine.
