About
From Joseph + Esther DeQuattro of Pane Vino comes the much anticipated Massimo. Massimo brings the quintessential Italian trattoria to Providence’s Federal Hill Neighborhood. Offering a seasonal Italian menu inspired by the regional cuisines of Italy. Signature dishes include Fettuccine alla Carbonara with guanciale and a farm fresh egg, the Fig & Taleggio Pizza, and the House-Aged Rib-eye “Fiorentina.” Located at the gateway to federal hill, Massimo is classically designed to create a warm and lively setting, featuring dark woods and bright pops of yellow. Massimo’s spacious dining room has giant sliding glass doors that lend an al fresco feel to the entire first floor. Upstairs, the glass-enclosed dining room – including a full bar & lounge – make it the perfect place for occasions of all scopes and sizes, whether it’s a quiet night out with friends and family, a corporate team building event, or a boisterous celebration with seating for up to 100 guests. Massimo has unique Italian wines from small boutique Italian winemakers and a cellar selection from Italy, Spain and California. Our approach to wine is accessibility, quality and variety to encourage unfettered enjoyment. Our bar features beers on tap, cocktails, and a large selection of classic Italian amari, grappa and many other Italian liqueurs.

Last week our family celebrated the birthday of our oldest son by treating him and our daughter to lunch before we departed for the airport. What a wonderful dining experience in every aspect! From the warm welcome of our server Lesley, to the final scrumptious dessert, we were in a culinary Paradise! The regular menu was very appealing, but being fortunate to have been there before, my husband and I opted for the three course lunch and our children went along with it. I had the roasted tomato soup which was very tasty and served with a dollop of sour cream . The other three had quite fresh Caesar salads. The entrees were just as enjoyable. Three out of four of us opted for the mouthwatering shrimp and risotto while the fourth orderd the ravioli. All were superb, and accompanied by Pino Grigio or Cabernet, were quite filling. The desserts were delightful, delicious tiramisu and cannoli. What a way to go!! We have been to plushier bistros with prices to match, but nothing we have encountered on Atwells Avenue, the Mecca of Italian culinary delights, can match the quality and value of Massimo! We will be back!

My wife and I stopped in at 1 p.m. on a Monday and the place was nearly full. It is apparently a very popular spot and reservations are recommended. Parking was a serious problem as the on street spots were taken and their parking lot was full. Further up the street there was construction that blocked the street so that may have contributed to the problem. There is a reserved valet spot right in front of the restaurant and the hostess told us it would be OK for us to park there as they do not have valet service during the day. We parked there and were seated immediately. My wife had the "Price fix" menu which is a terrific deal, being a 3 course meal for $17.00. I had the Frutti Del Mar which was very good but served with a marina sauce which I find unusal. It had a bit of spice to it. We had a long wait for my wife's Bread Pudding but the restaurant gave us a tiramisu to tide us over till it was read and then gave us that and the pudding for free. The complete meal took about 1 1/2 hours, as is cutomary in Italian homes. For the area we thought our bill was quite low and the staff were great, the food a treat.

With the rest of the family staying home this year, I decided to make a reservation at Massimo with my wife. I made a 2pm reservation and was seated promptly, The set up was great with ample separation and glass partitions. Albeit a tad cool, the atmosphere was festive and well done. Our server, Mercedes, was extremely pleasant and attentive and made for an excellent experience. We ordered a bottle of wine and added the calamari to the Thanksgiving Dinner offered. All courses were well presented and excellent. The only notation I'd make involves the dinner rolls offered. I think an opportunity was missed to set the stage for an otherwise great experience. These were lackluster at best. Perhaps a slight re-heating would have helped but I'd recommend a more unique offering reflecting the quality of the other courses. Just my opinion!

Besides the kind service from the valet, our overall impression of Massimo's was hurry up, eat, and leave. The place is cozy and rustic and could use tablecloths for evening service. And the chairs we had were very uncomfortable. Maitre’d woman acted like we were Invisible and bothering her. Our waitress was nice, but not overly helpful. The woman who cleaned the tables, removed dishes, and poured water, however was amazingly pushy. She continually tried to take our plates before we were finished and we noticed her doing The same to other customers, who also looked annoyed. It was hard to relax and enjoy our food. We had 7:30 reservations, so if they want to close up so badly, maybe they shouldn’t take them that late. My partner Had the carbonara. The meat on it was so badly charred that he couldn’t eat it. He just picked it out. I tasted it and it tasted like charcoal. I had the burrato ravioli and a meatball and it was delicious. If it hadn’t been for the ambience and service I would have rated higher.

Just a glance to its decor shows it has been ages since Massimo opened for business and thus a remodeling should be seriously considered, especially concerning the exposed pipes and A/C cylinders: an inexpensive dropped ceiling will do the trick. Service is disorganized and, consequently, slow. Front of the house staff (manager, waiters, busboys, host) continuously chat in groups on and off while the patient diners wait for the food to be served or their tables to be cleaned. Speaking of tables, mine was never serviced, however empty plates, breadcrumbs and water accumulated on its surface. As an antipasto, I ordered grilled octopus over beans and chorizo. The dish was well executed, but the octopus was lost in a sea of beans. If you are going to cut costs by serving smaller portions, at least use a smaller dish, so it is not so evident. Then followed Branzino (Seabass) over black lentils and roasted cauliflower with a white wine based sauce along with capers. Frankly, I was expecting a succulent filet cut that the description promised. Instead, to my dismay, I got a rachitic, rather dry, butterfly filet cut, with skin and, on top of that,… grilled! As for the wine, I ordered a Rose. Unfortunately, it was first “decanted” in a small glass bottle (maybe a portion glass) brought to my table and served again at room temperature and in a red wine glass: it tasted like diluted red wine. This experience has been a great lesson: do not order chef dishes or expect good service in a restaurant that survives from fixed price menus, hence why it was full

Choose to dine at Massimos on a Monday and was greatly disappointed in false advertising. We booked our reservation based on open table listing $1 oysters and half priced apps listed on their website. When our check came we were greatly disappointed. We asked a server why the apps were not discounted and they let us know that the management will be taking that out. We love supporting the local restaurants and had plans to go out to others for drinks after. However, that check was far more $$ than anticipated we called our evening short. The vestibule also smelled heavily of cigarette smoke. Before you go- call to confirm any and all specials lists online. The food is amazing, as always. The staff were attentive but unable to make a suggestion for accommodating the miscommunication from their online listings.

Although it was cold outside, warmth was in abundance inside. We were greeted with big smile and a friendly reception from Zac, the manager who welcomed and promptly seated us. Our server, Jonathan, was attentive to every detail and made us feel like we were the only ones in the restaurant. Dinner was delightful, starting with the beet and goat cheese salad. The way the goat cheese was prepared created a very nice presentation and it was as tasty as it was attractive. (I tasted the pumpkin ravioli with pancetta and pistachios which was equally as delicious.) For an entre, I had the Frutti di Mare over linguine. It was absolutely delectable. The portion was significant with enough for dinner the next evening. (I don’t usually leave with a “doggie bag”, but… it was that good.) Zac checked in with us during dinner to make sure everything was perfect and that we were enjoying our evening. Everything was so nice with the soft Italian music adding to the ambiance. Finally, … dessert. I couldn’t resist. Everything else was so good that I just had to try the dessert. It didn’t disappoint. The pistachio gelato was delicious. Thank you for a wonderful evening…. Zac, Jonathon, the valet guy who was very quick and even held the door, the bussers who kept the water glass full, and all those behind the scenes. I look forward to returning. Massimo’s has become my “go to” for dinner in the city.

Wonderful lunch. We attended the Foundry Artist Holiday Show in Pawtucket and usually lunch in Providence follows. Hadn’t been to Massimo’s for a while because of the pandemic but found it consistently good as ever. The ‘Presto’ 3 course midweek lunch menu is exceptional value and doesn’t skimp on quality. The ( home made) bread basket and olives is welcoming (bread is delicious). The portion sizes are just right. Lovely attentive service by Gina. We chose a bottle of Montepulciano to accompany both the Spaghetti Carbonara ( his) as well as my Chicken Piccata and it was perfect. Their Tiramisu is the best I’ve ever had - even in Italy. The restaurant ambiance has an ‘old school ‘ feel about it which we value and the food is always excellent and authentic. Valet parking adds to the feel good experience. We’ll be back for sure.

Party of four. Reservations for outside dining. It was 57 degrees. They had no propane for the outside heaters....but we were told it was "on the way." Indeed, after ten minutes a heater was placed next to our table on the sidewalk, and provided adequate heat. The wine pours were quite small. The one fifth of the glass with wine in it looked embarrassingly wimpy. The food was excellent! The waitress was helpful and friendly. The special app of fried calamari, octopus and first was great, and enough for four to sample. Main courses were generous in size and delicious. Two of us ate only part of the main course. I had the $30 veal chop parmesan with pasta...and only ate half. We asked for boxes to take the rest home, but the busser said he'd do it for us. It took 5 minutes to get the check and a few more minutes for the very helpful valet parking guy to bring our car. The busser was never seen again!! We were all distracted with the bill paying and the car thing. It is my fault that I forgot to inquire about "Where are our take home boxes???" But the kid should have returned them to us. So I have a bad taste in my mouth about Massimo, and am inclined to ask the manager for a partial refund. The cost of dinner was $102/couple, including one glass of wine.

I have given this place 4 time s to get it right in the past 1.5 years. Pre-Covid and post Covid. They always disappoint. The food is average at best. I went for brunch this time. Food was luke warm. We ate upstairs and I felt as though that hurt food delivery and service. I don't even remember what we ate it was so uneventful. We left saying that sucked, never again. This place has a sister restaurant Pane e Vino just up Atwells Ave. No glamorous sidewalk seating or full windows in front. But the food is great and blows this place away. Let me add The gift cards are a scam. Spend $100. get $125. NO. Use the whole $100. and then you get the $25. bonus in the mail. So you can end up with $1.00 left on the card and never get the $25. Which means you cannot walk in and use your $1.00 credit and use the $25. you are owed. Ripoff.

We had a wonderful dinner here with an amazing fish dish with capers. One of the best meals in Providence! The only reason I can’t give this 5 stars is because we had to wait over 30 mins for a table despite being on time for our reservation. The hostess said they were just running late that night, which I understand because it was a Saturday. Still, she said that it would be a five minute wait, but it ended up being 30 minutes. I’m not sure what kinks they have to work out (because the service once we were seated was fast!) but I hope next time our reservation is honored.

Went today to support the local businesses during COVID19. What a disappointment. The grilled octopus was so salty it was inedible and my linguini fruits di mare was no better. Overly salty, mussels were fishy and the shrimp was overcooked. New owners need help!!

We visited Massimo this past Saturday. It was our first visit and definitely won’t be the our last. We had a 7:30 reservation but were not seated until about 8:15. We were able to sit at the bar during the wait which was nice. Drinks and service at the bar were excellent. The bartenders were friendly and even offered their favorite menu recommendations. Our waitress was awesome. It was a busy night and she really worked hard at making sure she checked on us. The manager also visited our table at least three times to check on us and offered us a free appetizer because of the wait. I was pretty impressed at the level of attention they paid to us. The food is just amazing. Literally no words. We have added this place as one of our favorites and plan on visiting regularly.

My wife and I found ourselves in Providence on Fri., Jan 24 at a restaurant that was closed for lunch (I had foolishly neglected to check its hours of operation). Since Federal Hill was close by, we found our way to Il Massimo on Atwells Ave. We had not been there since its days as the Mediterraneo. We were served by a fine young man named Connor, who was unfailingly knowledgeable, pleasant and accomodating. The meal began with bread and caponata. The bread appeared to be a focacia crusted with cheese, and the caponata was out of this world; before that meal, I had never been a fan of caponata. My wife Debbie had mussels with a spicy Calabrese sauce, while I had branzino with lentils and cauliflower---all of it delicious. We found this to be a wonderful restaurant experience on a wonderful day, and we look forward to the next time at Il Massimo.

Came for dinner after a trip to Brown. Great dinner. The veal was excellent. Very flavorful sauce. One of the people in are party eats gluten free. They had a whole gluten free menu and brought him gluten free bread too. The staff was very attentive and could not have been friendlier. Looking for ward to dining here again.
