Was disappointed to see the beautiful koi mural on the ceiling had been painted over with white paint. Doesn’t feel as elegant. The uniforms that the waitstaff wear no longer match the atmosphere of the restaurant. It seems like the uniform would be more high end than that. In years past a bread person would come around and you could continuously pick out bread. This time they bring one very small tray with 3 small pieces of onion bread to leave at your table. When I told him we wait all year to have the onion bread he didn’t even offer to bring more. The changes from years past is the quantities. The starters, such as the tomato salad or beet salad, are big. The entrees are way smaller with a lot less vegetables. My entree had 3 skinny shrunken green beans or asparagus with 3 small slices of ahi. Yet the desserts are HUGE. I felt so bad that I couldn’t eat more of the lava flow type cake and it was never offered to be wrapped up to go. This year we noticed dishes were not cleared and actually sat for awhile on the table. I’ve never seen that there before. It just seems less and less magical to eat there each time we go. This won’t be on my yearly “must do” list after this visit.

Some of the best food we’ve ever eaten! We had the Kona Lobster and the Japanese Hamachi appetizers followed by the Pineapple Coconut Curry and the Seared Ahi Tuna main courses. The fish was so fresh, it melted in my mouth. I really loved the mild flavors as I can’t eat spicy food. My husband loved the curry as did the couple at the next table we struck up a conversation with.
We had an outstanding drink called the Penicillin. It was 2 kinds of Scotch, lime juice and honey. What a great combination of smokey, sweet and tart. Just loved it and ordered another after dinner. The Puck red wine we ordered was also wonderful and quite affordable.
The weather turned stormy and we had to move inside, which was disappointing, but certainly not the restaurant’s fault. The wait staff was extremely accommodating, brought wraps for everyone and seated us inside as soon as they could.
What a wonderful experience and delightful way to spend my birthday! Thank you, Spago!!

Probably the best restaurant on Maui! Great fresh sushi, oysters, local fish. Banana bread dessert! Server "Jeb" was excellent. Good wine list, extensive bar.
Spago manager "Amanda" gets our vote for best restaurant manager on the island: hands on from greeting customers to busing dishes to setting up tables herself to motivating staff!! She has the place running like a well oiled machine!

3rd visit to this restaurant, and wont be back. beautiful space, great service. beet and arugula salad ($25) arrived with no arugula or greens on the plate. was told, "we are out of arugula". the server did bring a small plate of greens subsequently. 3 of us ordered the opakapaka, which was served on a tea leaf, with spicy thai sauce. i love hot and spicy, but, the sauce was so hot, couldn't even taste the fish! could have been frozen cod. the portion was tiny, maybe 4 bites to finish for $52. everyone that ordered said it was too hot. after 2 strikes, we left without ordering desert.

We booked over a month ago, looking forward to Spago. Upon arriving, we waited 15 minutes after our reservation time to be seated, only to be taken to an inside table right next to the sushi bar and the front door. When asked to move outside we were told there were no options. Then when multiple tables opened up outside we had to go ask to be moved. Ordinarily this wouldn’t be a big deal, but the attitude from the hostess was quite bad. She just didn’t care. No apology for being seated 15 minutes late, no effort to find us a table outside, and then attitude when we had to go ask to move outside. It’s a pity because the food was good, the hostess just created a really bad first impression that was hard to recover from.

After having lunch earlier in the week at Mama’s Fish House, the experience here was sadly a disappointment. I guess if your cool with a sleek /sheik hotel restaurant atmosphere, you might enjoy it. We had a curry recommended to us and to be honest, it didn’t blow my socks off and was 5 times as expensive as local Thai places we frequent back in Cali. The ostentatious wine list was a gauntlet and the first bottle recommended to us by the waiter we sent back because it was super sour and tasted like it had gone bad. The second bottle they brought was only slightly better, but my spouse was too embarrassed to send it back after the manager came out and unapologetically poured it into a craft telling us “it just needed to get some air.” The service for us was not spectacular either. Other tables seated after us were getting service and entrees before we did. The place really had a corporate vibe I just couldn’t get past .. suffice to say, I wasn’t left feeling generous when it came time to tip on the $320 tab for the meal. Two stars instead of one because the view was nice.

We were a party of 4 celebrating an important birthday, and our concierge at the Grand Wailea made the reservation for us. Spago is set in the Four Seasons with a lovely view of the ocean and the hotel property. Though covered, the walls / windows were open so that it felt as if we were outdoors, very classy and very comfortable. The special appetizer was hours-old sashimi and other sushi treats that were the best we've ever tasted. Weston and David were our service team, and they were extremely attentive and thoughtful in their care for us. In fact, part way through our meal an adjacent table was so rowdy that we couldn't have a conversation. So Weston moved us to a quieter table where we could enjoy our meal with civil conversation at a reasonable volume level. The problem was the client, not the restaurant. Macadamia nut encrusted Mahi Mahi was beautifully served on a bed of Molokai purple yams....DELICIOUS! We also had a chocolate soufflé and cheesecake for dessert, 2 servings feeding four of us comfortably. Spago has its own special approach to traditional dishes. If you want an amazing, memorable meal in a beautiful setting with excellent service, this is your choice in Wailea.

The restaurant is located in the Four Seasons resort. You can choose valet parking by pulling up to the hotel entrance, or take the park yourself option in the first garage you see coming down the hill.
As you walk into the resort, once you get to the area with the check in desk, turn around. The restaurant is on the same level, to the left as you walk in, oceanside.
We checked in slightly early, and were seated at a lovely table with a perfect view of the water.
We started with a review of their 35 page wine list, which is available online. I can tell you that looking at a wine list of that magnitude can be daunting, but we settled on a nice California Cabernet. They do have a Level 3 Sommelier available to assist you in pairing a good wine with your meal - it is important to provide your price point, as some bottles are into 4 figure prices.
For an appetizer, we ordered their Poke Tuna cones, which come with three cones. The server suggested upgrading to 4 cones, which we did. The poke was served in caramelized sugar cones - oooooo! Tasty!
For the main course, my wife suggested their Tomahawk steak, which was served for two cooked medium rare, and sliced off the bone. It was very rich and tasted great. It was served on a bed which included rosemary and garlic, and the flavors really popped.
The service was very good. If I reached for the wine decanter, our server appeared in seconds to pour.
The views were outstanding - some of the best we have seen in Maui.
This is definitely fine dining. With wine, were were north of $500 for the meal.

Like all Spagos, the food is wildly expensive but worth it for a special occasion. That said, the dining experience varies wildly depending on where you're seated. Basically, if you're seated out on the lanai or even in the main dining room, you'll enjoy a glamorous vibe that justifies the price. If you're seated in the back room, it's gonna feel a little like you're in a nice dining area at an old age home. Bottom line, reserve early and be very very clear on where you don't want to sit.

The Spago name is an institution and you expect a very creative, daring menu (or at least a subsection of the menu) to live up to history of this name sake.
What we found were some tried and true classics which was disappointing given Wolfgang as the executive in charge of the menu and the ability to get creative with a Hawaiian location. They have a very creative cocktail menu but that has not translated over to the food menu. The tuna poke cones were not as good as we had anticipated.
I will echo what others have said - the onion rolls are amazing!

Given the rental car shortage in Maui, my husband and I were carless and decided to give Spago a shot as it was our first night in Maui. We were seated fairly quickly at a table outside. It was a beautiful night and although the sun had gone down, you could still hear the ocean waves crashing nearby. We decided to order a few things off the menu to share. We started with the poke cones which were pretty good. Great flavor combination, just wish there was more poke to cone ratio. We then shared the roasted beet salad. AMAZING. It earns this rating a whole star from us. Just so fresh and so good. You have to try it; no way my review will capture the complexity of the flavors from beets paired well. For my entree, I had the tomato soup. The table bread was a delicious focaccia and as if he had read my mind, the waiter suggested he bring some for me to eat with the soup. Lovely! But it never came... bummed to have missed out on that combo. My husband had the Kona Maine lobster. Apparently, the lobsters are born in Maine and then flown to Kona to be raised and eaten. The novelty of it all appealed to my husband but sadly, we were pretty disappointment. Lobster tasted like any other lobster and goodness, it was such a small amount that was served with a GIANT bowl of brown rice. Like way too much rice. At the end, my husband was still hungry and wanted to ask for soy sauce to eat with the rest of his rice. I'm Chinese so I wouldn't let him. We ordered dessert instead. The cheesecake was pretty lackluster too. Kind of tasted like something you'd buy in the supermarket. We'd skip this one for sure. Overall, go for the beet salad. Otherwise, find somewhere else.

Probably the most delicious dinner we had in Maui. Started with salads (which weren’t even on the menu). They were large enough to share and cost $19 each.
For entrees, I ordered the Mac nut crusted Mahi Mahi, husband ordered the chicken. Daughter got the pasta with meat sauce, and son ordered the salmon from the kids menu. While all of the entree portions were on the small side, our only complaint was the size of the salmon for the kids dish - ridiculously small!
Overall a little pricey, but worth it.

We had some great fish and chocolate soufflé for dessert was amazing. Service was very good once we asked to change tables. They originally sat us at the first table in the main path into the restaurant in front of the kitchen. It was probably the worse table in the restaurant. The music is loud and sounds like a boom box in the background so people have to shout to talk over the music. They turned the tables over so it was very busy. Probably once was enough for us, the food was great but not good enough to put up with the lack of any ambience.

We ate two meals here in two days... why? Because the first one was so delicious.
Sat in the bar and ate from the regular menu. The staff were solicitous, knowledgeable, and friendly. The kind of place you wish you could be a regular.
Food was fresh and creative.... we wished we could have tried everything on the menu.
There is a lot of fish - both raw and cooked - on the menu. It is very fresh and very interesting.
One particularly good dish was a curried shrimp dish which tasted very fresh and light.
A small disappointment was a “special” black truffle dish for which the truffle seemed a little old. Not a big deal, just a minor dent in an exciting dinner.

We have been coming to Maui for many years now and stay at the Four Seasons Hotel.
Spago is our favorite restaurant in Maui.
What a view at night!
All the food is delicious and presented so beautiful.
We ate here 4 nights on a 10 day visit and love everything about the food, setting and service.
Daniel the Dining Room Manager was amazing and helped make my husband’s birthday extra special.
To Sara Rose thanks for handling our reservations. To Kassey- Assistant General Manager thank you too!
What makes the dining so special here is the waiters. Thanks to Jeb, Jafet, Noelly, Kylor, and Gabriel. The pastry chef made a wonderful creation for the birthday cake.
Spago's is not to be missed if you are in Maui!
We can't wait to come back again.
