I ordered the Seafood Cobb Salad which was described on the menu they gave me as having salmon and shrimp. When it came I didn't see any shrimp and the salmon looked more like chicken. I took a small bite. Yep, chicken. I told the waitress who took it into the kitchen and came back and said their Cobb salad... More

Usually we like this place. But on the last night we visited, the entertainment was an Elvis impersonator singing country western songs. An Elvis Impersonator at a German Restaurant? Could anything be more bizarre? Sometimes I think these people don't have a clue.

I have not ate here in a couple of years. I was visiting in Madison and was hungry for a Fish Fry. When we sat down we were greeted by our server "Greg" toting two pretzels in a basket with dipping sauce. The AYCE Fish Fry was $11.95 I ordered it with Homemade In-House made Potato Pancake. The meal came... More

I have been going to the Essen Haus for years because they serve great German beer at a very inexpensive price. They serve in 1/2 liter steins giving you 4 more ounces than most bars in Madison (considering room for the head) for less money than anyone else in town. And the happy hour prices are in effect every day... More

The band, beer and people watching was great-but we were looking for some great German food. The spaetzle was unlike any that we have ever had-it was a white, gooey mess with raw onions and grated yellow cheese on the top. There were none of the promised pretzels in sight. We were quite disappointed. The other couple's schnitzel looked grey,... More

Went with a group of ten to Essen Haus on Saturday night. What a treat! A great selection of food, including American favorites for those who don't want German cuisine. It all tasted great and the prices were pretty reasonable for a solid meal. The live band was also a treat. The place was packed and having a great time.... More

The Essen Haus specializes in German fare in the $17-20 range for a full meal. Quality of the food is good -- the portions are hearty and meant for everyday kinds of diners. The place is large and can be noisy -- it has the atmosphere of a beer hall more than a quiet restaurant. Bands play, beer flows --... More

Arrived at 4:30pm on a Saturday. Seated immediately and served pretzels with cream cheese, kraut dip - Very tasty. Nice selection of German beers too. By 5pm the restaurant was very busy. My wife and I both had types of schnitzel which were very good with spaetzele and red cabbage. My only issue was the dish was served Luke warm.... More

Always a great stop to enjoy a German beer. If we have a group of four or so we will get a boot or two and pass it around. We always follow the Das Boot Contest Rules. The warm pretzels with mustard and horseradish are a must with your beer. The restaurant offers good German fare. Essen Haus is a... More
