The Grotto restaurant is located in the basement of an old house. It has few tables and light little intense, to the point of not being able to read the menu. The service is very friendly, which surprised us after a week in NYC. The food is delicious, contemplates the italian service: "Primo; Secondo and Terzo piatti". However the order... More

A girlfriend and I just showed up on a busy Saturday and were fortunate to be seated immediately. Beet salad was wonderful, and both our pasta were delicious and plentiful. We took the $36 three course meal and also enjoyed the desserts, although I would have preferred a real chocolate cake as opposed to a pudding type. A warning that... More

We were a group of 3 friends having dinner before Boston Marathon. The place is small and has a really nice ambience to go on date. Food was really good too. Definitely make a reservation before going.

Quick trip to Boston with another couple. Typically I love the South End but they suggested we spend the night around Beacon Hill area. Grotto is a walk up the hill and closer to the State House. It is nestled into a neighborhood area and can be missed easily. Make it a point to GO! I had the duck which... More

The restaurant is tucked away in a basement in Beacon Hill. The atmosphere is romantic, with low lighting. Service was excellent, with the staff being attentive without being bothersome. For a starter we both had the grilled calamari salad on arugula, which was sublime. I had the ricotta gnudi with spinach. The airy pasta pillows melted in my mouth. My... More

A hidden gem with a delicious prix fixe menu! Food was delicious and well-plated. Portion sizes were ample enough. Highly recommended , but make sure you have a reservation!

Had an incredible meal at an extraordinary reasonable price. The gnocchi was fantastic but the chocolate cake was incredible. Great service and warm ambiance.

Had a great dinner at this Italian restaurant. Great food and service. Very low lighting, making it better for a romantic dinner, but maybe less appealing for a family or business dinner. I would definitely go back for a special night out.

I came with a friend for dinner during restaurant week. They had one of the best restaurant week menu selections, and everything I got was absolutely delicious! I got the grilled calamari to start, the fra diavolo with lobster for dinner, and the melting chocolate cake. Very cozy environment too! My only cons about Grotto are that it is really... More

Used to live on the street and hadn't been in 5 years. The restaurant was just as great as I remember it. The meal was amazing, we had the short rib gnocchi, truffle garlic soup, chocolate cake, banana bread pudding and chicken parm. The meal was amazing, service was excellent and cocktails were on point. Can't wait to go back.... More

Staying in Downtown

Neighbourhood Profile
Downtown
The largest area of the city, Downtown is rich with historical and iconic sites in Boston. Stroll through one of Boston’s most famous green spaces, the Boston Public Gardens, check out and make way for duckling statues, picnic under a beautiful tree overlooking the pond, and walk over the iconic footbridge where, during summer time, you will catch a swan boat toting children and eager tourists through the pond. Have your camera ready to capture its peaceful beauty in the middle of a bustling city. Continue on through the Gardens and take in some open green space at the Boston Common, where you can spend time throwing a frisbee, sitting on a park bench, or, in the winter time, skating on the frog pond. Head north from the end of the Common to see the golden dome of the State House, and travel through government center to Quincy Market and Faneuil Hall, both a historic and popular destination worth a quick visit for a first time to Boston. Head to Long Wharf to visit the Aquarium, or catch a boat to Charlestown or even Cape Cod.
