One of my favorite seafood meals ever! We had a reservation for 8 people on a Saturday and the restaurant was packed. We still had to wait over 20 minutes to be seated, even with our reservation and there was nowhere to wait or stand. Eventually we were led to a table downstairs in the basement, which was much more... More

I got the Cioppino despite it being a dinner for two, on recommendation from my server. It was delicious! It was packed with seafood of all kinds and the best was the fresh Dungeness crab! Beware, it does take some work and mess to get the crab, so accept the silly bib they give you. My server also wisely advised... More

Overall, one of the best meals I've eaten in a long time. The food was excellent, absolutely delicious. The service was ok. The atmosphere was ok. It was very easy to find and get to via Uber, but parking would be tough if you were driving. I would go back in a hot minute! More details below: We were a... More

The food is delicious and the restaurant provides a good variety of seafood. The service is excellent. Table is hard to,get. The restaurant is crowded, hot and noisy. My preferred table is outside where it is quieter and cooler. Excellent seafood chowder.

Fun Friday night stop. A landmark on a street full of charming Italian restaurants. Seafood was abundant and tasty. Basic wine list. The fra diavolo for two a giant portion and so deliciously spiced. The clams with linguini had excellent scampi like sauce. The Dungeness crab also tasty. It's crowded, it's fun and it's tasty. It's not fine dining but... More

On this trip to California,we squeezed in 2 nights to stay in San Francisco. Soto Mare was our choice for the one restaurant to revisit. We were seated at the counter which we prefer.I had to ask about Sand Dabs. The server said Sand Dabs are found only in Pacific waters. She made them sound so good. And they were! My husband had... More

No desserts, no frills and nearly a two hour wait on Saturday night. But I have to say the Cioppino (crab and seafood soup) is "out-of-this-world". Ignore the tourists, ignore the lack of frills and focus on the food. Probably one of the better Italian restaurants in North Beach.

If you searching for best Cioppinoi San Francisco this is it. They are all also hands down one of the seafood restaurants in the city. Everything is served Italian style. The atmosphere and busy restaurant also makes for a comical dining experience. The staff are friendly and informative. They now the menu inside out. Wines and beverages are also priced... More

Friend and I sat at counter taking in the atmosphere and shared the house specialty with fresh bread which lived up to its reputation. Later we discussed with the hostess some of the pictures on the wall and also discussed the pictures, history with the owner standing outside greeting people.

Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighbourhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighbourhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighbourhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighbourhood home.
